BEN OLMANIN DAYANILMAZ AĞIRLIĞI/ THE UNBEARABLE HEAVINESS OF BEING ME

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH:

Sometimes the burden that falls upon the shoulders of a person (or a rabbit) becomes so hard to bear!

This bit of animation emerged at a time when I was feeling just that way!

I would prefer more lighthearted inspirations but using our art to put up with distressing experiences is a prerogative of us artists!

ŞEHRAZAT-SCHEHERAZADE

TÜRKÇE
(For English please scroll down.)

Scenes I animated for the pilot film for a projected Scheherazade series.

ENGLISH

While salvaging my old animation from my Amiga line-tester (a painstaking procedure) I stumbled upon some scenes I once animated for a Scheherazade series to be made in Germany. I don't remember the exact time but I have a feeling it was between 2001-2005.

If I remember correctly, the character models were based on designs by the very talented Andy Knight, whom I had met in Berlin during my first stint at Hahn Film, 1989-1991.

Character concepts for Sheherazade and the Caliph by (I am almost certain of it)
the great Andy Knight.

Andy (Andrew) Knight was a Canadian animator, animation designer, director, and illustrator, a Sheridan College alumnus as I am. It is difficult, even impossible, to trace his
Andrew D. Knight, 1961-2008
large body of work because much of it is behind the scenes (I remember how much better the Werner comics of German cartoonist Brösel looked after Andy's skilled hands polished them up!) and even more just disappeared as projects were dropped. He died unexpectedly of a stroke in 2008, far too young, at the height of his creativity. He was only 47!

I don't know if any of my animation was ever used but I enjoyed the work and am pleased with the results. By the way, I needed to have the Caliph say something to clarify the situation (that he was anxiously waiting for Scheherazade's arrival); so I came up with the phrase "sit down, my dear, sit down", and voiced it myself.

ÇANAKKALE-1915-GALLIPOLI

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Little bits of existing animation. I animated the falling ANZAC when I was still at Disney Paris, between 1996-1998. I added on the Turkish soldier firing at him in 2008, and used them in a commemoration clip for the anniversary of Atatur's demise, December 10th.

ENGLISH

This year we commemorate the centennial of the Gallipoli campaign, which the British and French, supported by the Australian and New Zealanders (ANZAC) and various colonials, undertook to force their way through the Turkish Dardanelles straits and take the capital. That the Turks were able to resist and repulse the onslaught has been a great point of pride. It has found particular resonance in Turkey this year, at a time when the country has been stabbed in the back and invaded from within. (If you want the backstory on that you can see tashlik.blogspot.com)

This year the commemorations on March 18th, the anniversary of the Naval Victory (really the overture of the 8-month conflict) enjoyed tremendous public response. Those critical of the government and accuse it of recklessly selling off the country see the defense of Gallipoli as an inspiration for a renewed struggle for national defense. Supporters of the government and its policies tend to interpret the struggle at Gallipoli as a victory of muslim piety over the godless infidel. Our outlook corresponds to the former, and we went there to join the activities of the TGB (Türkiye Gençlik Birliği, the "Union of Turkish Youth").

Let's leave the politics aside; this isn't that kind of a blog.

One evening far back, when I was still an animation student in Canada, I accompanied some friends to a intellectual cafe where we sat on the floor and listened to some live music. First there was a south American group singing revolutionary songs in Spanish. Then came a young lady with a guitar and a powerful voice and sang some songs of peace, love and nature. Then she sang something called The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, which told of an Australian sent to war in Gallipoli and lost his legs in battle. Naturally, it caught my attention. After she had finished her program, I went up to the singer and told her I was Turkish, that the Gallipoli conflict was an important and proud part of our history, that I was studying animation, and that I would really like to use the song in a film. She kindly consented to record it for me. And she did. She came to our school, played and sang, and we recorded the song. She said "I don't take money from students", and so I got the fine performance for free. Her name was Paula Kriwoy.

I was still a student then, now I am retired. I have animated for years, but never got round to putting the recording to good use. A few sketches, some bits of animation, that's all. A shame, really! The centennial reminds me of this excellent material I landed on but shamefully left lying dormant.

PAZARYERİNDE FUTBOL- SOCCER IN THE MARKETPLACE

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Bkz. www.ersoz.com .

From time to time I sift through my cassettes to salvage old animation, and some of them I share with you. This time I have another scene from Werner Beinhart (1990). I shared another on October 28th 2014 ; see "Bikers on the Road."
I worked on that film back in 1989-90, and was even credited as head animator (chefanimator) though there was a whole section made in Hamburg towards which I had absolutely no contribution at all. Looking back, I can't help reflecting on what a happy, exciting time it was. The Berlin wall was cracking open, the world was going through a historic change and we were right at the hub of it, incongruously occupied with a cartoon about drunken motorcyclists. From the scenes I am sharing you can see how loose and free the animation style was. Maybe they look that way because I was so relaxed and confident when I made them.

In this section of the movie our hero Werner flings a soccer ball out of his apartment window down to a market area. The ball bounces off things and gets kicked around by the shoppers and vendors, resulting in a soccer match- except that the "players" are unaware of the game. The spectators consist of birds on the surrounding roofs and of course Werner himself who delivers a continuous commentary like a sports reporter.

The crew included the gifted Turkish animator Şahin Ersöz. Animation came so naturally to him, he produced so fast, so effortlessly, with so much exuberance and life, that he easily qualifies as a genius in the art. See: www.ersoz.com

YENİ YIL 2015 NEW YEAR

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Bkz. Next Year Has to Be Better.

Herkese mutlu yıllar!

Yeni Yılınız Kutlu Olsun- Happy New Year!

English

Yet another year has turned into a bunch of memories, good and bad. It has been a tradition with me to have my pencil in my hand, drawing something as we enter the new year, and if circumstances allow it, to be at my desk, animating. This year was no exception and I'm happy with the work I did,  but I won't be sharing my new year's night animation with you here. It's hush hush, a production secret you see, because I am working on an independent short. Yet another one, yes, I have so many incomplete ones now that I have quite a collection of scenes I can't show around because I still suffer from the delusion that I can finish them somehow someday.  BUT THIS TIME I'LL GET IT DONE! I promise!

If I can't share my new year's night animation for this year, I can still share the cleaned up version of he one from last year. Actually, that was also supposed to be part of a short. I shared the rough version of that one on Vimeo only, and there is also an opening scene for the same film idea I animated before that. I've decided to share it all; hey, it's the new year! Enjoy!

Another tradition with us is the drawing we make for the new year. Again it has a political flavor, but if you've lived in Turkey in 2014, you can^'t get away from it! The idea is from my wife Lâle Özgür, and she also chose the colors. I just drew it. For an explanation of all the detail see: "Next Year Has to Be Better"

YOLDA MOTORCULAR- BIKERS ON THE ROAD

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

geliyor.

ENGLISH

Back in 1989-90, while the famous Berlin wall was shaking and crumbling, a small studio in the same city was hard at work on the production of a silly comedy that had no connection with the world-shaking event so near. Werner Beinhart (1990) was based on a popular comic book, and I had been given the position of animation director. Oblivious to the world changing just beyond the studio doors, our characters never wavered from their only two interests in the world: beer and bikes!

I took advantage of my position to secure some juicy scenes for myself. I wanted very much to animate this scene in the way I envisioned it. (I had boarded the sequence myself.) I did all of the animation, including most of the rough inbetweening. I only passed on roadside details like signposts for inbetweening. Now, when digging this scene up, I found some pencil tests dating from the time and I cut them to the beginning of the clip to demonstrate the thinking process. I animated the road first- a simple cycle, or rather two for the most part, but the viewpoint switches from about waist level, to show the beer can changing hands, to a lower angle from which the bikes will look more imposing. Of course, this change of angle needed to be incorporated smoothly into the cycles.

Travelling with my family as a child, I used to sit in the front of our '59 Mercedes 220 S, next to my father, and had plenty of time to observe the road flowing towards us beyond the windshield. I reconnected with that experience a lot in making this scene, particularly when the bikes veer off to the right at the turnout (including the tell-tale tire tracks of a vehicle that couldn't make the turn).

I animated the bikes on threes and when inbetweening added in a three-frame squash and stretch in and around the rear wheel area to simulate the vibration of the motor. The sausages shooting out of the handlebar quotes a joke about a "sausage signal" earlier in the sequence. (German sausage humor!) The film had reached post-production stage when the studio decided to add dialogue to the scene, which is why there is no lip-synch and we hear Werner's voice even while he is downing his beer.

BALYOZ- SLEDGEHAMMER

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH
The "Sledgehammer Coup Plot" allegation first hit the public in the face on January 20th, 2010, with the bombastic headline of a newsrag named Taraf. The headline went "They were going to bomb the Fatih mosque". According to the newspaper, the Turkish Armed Forces had been plotting a secret operation, codename "Sledgehammer" (Balyoz) with the aim of creating a climate of anarchy as an excuse for staging a coup. Taraf claimed the Armed Forces were willing to bomb our own mosque and shoot one of our own planes to reach this end. What followed was a widespread roundup of officers, recalling the similarly unfounded "Ergenekon Terror Organization" witchhunts that had preceded it. It was clear and obvious to many, including myself, that the true target was the secular Turkish Republic, as founded by Ataturk, and the Armed Forces that were sworn to defend it. The lie could be mantained only so long. The "Sledgehammer" inmates were released starting June 19th, 2014, less than two years after being condemned to long sentences, including life, on September 20th, 2012. Similarly, the Ergenekon inmates had been released en masse this past March 7th. One would think the AKP government would suffer a severe loss of credibility after the collapse of allegations it so strongly backed, but amazingly, prime minister Erdoğan managed to shift the entire bame on erstwhile partner in crime Fethullah Gülen, the "Imam of Pennsylvania", and his "Community". Now the whitewashed prime minister is running for presidency. I made the animation above prior to the constitutional referendum of September 12th, 2010. At the time the AKP government was soliciting extensive constitutional amendments in order to strengthen its own hand in transforming the secular Turkish Republic into an Islamist theocracy, exploiting the specter of a military coup in order to execute a civilian one. I freely used the "sledgehammer" image, so topical at the time. I then sent this animaton to friends and acquaintances by e-mail. The first caption says "Now it's in the hands of the electorate", the second one says "a civilian response to a civilian coup" followed by "no", the third says "to the ballot box for the response". The larger part of the electorate chose to support the AKP's amendments nevertheless.

YAŞLI ADAM- OLD MAN

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

It was the end of January this year (2014), a friend called to ask if I would be willing to contribute to an independent animated film effort. Being retired for several years now, I was very happy to hear someone ask me to animate something so I aaccepted without inquiring much. It turned out to be an extended scene in a film about a lonely old man- he dies at the end of the film. When I read the synopsis of my one scene, I was too proud to backtrack, so I just dived in, starting the animation on February 3rd. For the movements and gestures, I observed my own father, 93 gong on 94. In truth, being an old soldier, my father is not so badly hunched, but his movements are much slower. An extended slow-paced animation performance with no recourse to humor was a challenge as well as a humbling experience, forcing me to empathize with the aged and frail. I completed the animation on April 3rd. On the night of April 11th, we had to rush my father to hospital. At the time of writing this, he is in intensive care, where the doctors are administering artificial respiration. There is a very fine drama series on BBC called "Lark Rise to Candleford" (based on an autobiographical novel by Flora Thompson) full of very wise and useful observations that one can use as maxims. Here is one: "To love is to lay yourself open to loss. That is the bargain we make with ourselves. Because it is worth it!"

I don't exactly remember when I made these two pieces of animation, but I believe it was around the year 2000. The idea was to demonstrate that different styles of animation require the creation of different animation "universes" with their own physical rules, impossibilities and plausibilities. A blow that can kill our character in one animation "universe" will only stun him in another. Exaggeration should not be used gratuitously, mixing different styles, different universes, within a project may lead to an unsatisfying, even annoying viewing experience. Here I interpreted the same small episode- passing on a stolen safe- in two different styles; the first is more restrained, closer to reality, the second more "cartoony".

KARGA BİLE GÜLER- EVEN CROWS LAUGH

TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)

In Turkish, "even the crows laugh" is an idiom expressing a blatant, painfully obvious absurdity. That a party notorious for corrupting justice to remove potential political enemies and building up a retrograde fundamentalist consumer society on borrowed money could call itself "The Party for Justice and Progress" is just such an absurdity. Sadly, crows are more observant than much of the voting public. I made this animation before the elections of 2011, strictly personally, and shared it with friends and acquaintances online. Now, with the municipal elections approaching (the day after tomorrow) I've decided to share it again here. The croaking laughter is my own voice.

ÖNCE YÜRÜMEYİ ÖĞRENMEK- LEARNING TO WALK FIRST

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

During the times I taught animation, I would animate sample scenes to demonsttrate certain points and aspects to my students. I made this series of walk cycles- going from too little to too much- most probably during my stint at Bilkent University, Ankara, though I'm not quite sure. If it dates from my Bilkent years, it would be before 1995. The opening animation of the words "Tips for Tash" on the disc is more recent- October 2013- and I meant it to be a standard title to present all such animation scenes I made for demonstration purposes.

ÇİZGİ FİLM BAYRAMI- HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

Remember those anxious years when CG animation was becoming increasingly popular, theratening to push hand-drawn animation completely off the screens? That's when we dreamed up the idea of a "Cartoon Animation Day" or "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", to remind people of the very particular beauty of drawings that move. The celebrations would be held on November 18th, commemorating the 1928 release of Steamboat Willie, considered the first Mickey Mouse film and the first cartoon conceived and made as a sound film. We hoped to spread the idea, our friend Rıdvan Çevik, teaching animation at Anadolu University, Eskişehir, tried to turn it into a day of activities at his school, and when I and my wife started teaching at Maltepe University, Istanbul, we tried to do the same. (See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", Sept. 10th, 2010.) But after trying for a few years in a row, we saw that the idea wasn't catching on. Now, with even our national celebrations under threat, our caprice of a day for hand-drawn animation seems childish and unimportant. (Compatriots will know what I am talking about!) Today I got a phone call from Çevik in Eskişehir; he was wishing us a "happy Hand-Drawn Animation Day". The best word for my feelings would be: bittersweet. We marched for October 29th, Republic Day, we marched for November 10th, anniversary of Ataturk's decease, because we were against the government's push to make us forget them. I felt I had to do something for our own November 18th, once so important to me because I wanted to keep people from forgetting the art and craft I loved. As it happens, I had left a cassette containing some animation work at a photo shop to be transferred on disc and was due to pick them up today. I decided to share some old animation in honor of the occasion. I picked this one; I had animated it at Hahn Film in Berlin back in 1995 or '96. The concept and character belong to Swiss artist Ted Sieger. I feel it's a good example of the kind of freedom and liveliness that makes hand-drawn animation special. Pure flip-power!

ERGENEKON

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

When I was working for Disney Paris- the year was 1996, the project Hercules, we used to see the "dailies" of all Disney animated features in production on a regular basis, to keep the creative juices flowing. That's when I saw scenes from Mulan for the first time; it was in production at Disney Florida then.

I was very impressed, it's still one of my favorite Disney films. The charismatic villains were the Huns, and since we Turks consider them our forefathers, I got into a lot of Hun talk with my colleagues in the studio.

The French can't produce the "h" sound, and they tend to swallow the last letter of a word, so they kept calling the Huns "les 'eu". It took me a while to catch on to what they were talking about!

All those Mulan scenes and Hun talk inspired me to animate this scene of a "Hun"; a completely private bit of animation. I have labeled it "Ergenekon", rather provocatively because it's a hot word today. "Ergenekon" is really an ancient Turkish saga, but the word has gained notoriety in Turkey recently because it has been used repeatedly within the context of a shadowy political purge process. I wont go into it because this is not a political blog; that sort of stuff I write elsewhere. It's just that the word has been done to death in the last few years, and it prompted me to fish out this old piece of animation and share it with you. An ancestor who is a Hun will also pass for an ancestor from the mythical valley of Ergenekon!

SÜRÜNEN HABERCİ- THE CRAWLING MESSENGER

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Buraya son koyduğum şey, Hırsız ve Kunduracı ("The Thief and the Cobbler") filminden "ölen haberci" karakterinin at sırtında ağır çekim dörtnal gidişiydi.

Hırsız ve Kunduracı: sürünen haberci- Thief and the Cobbler: messenger crawling from tahsinozgur on Vimeo.

ENGLISH

The last thing I blogged was the slow-motion gallop of the "dying messenger" from The Thief and the Cobbler. (See: "The Thief and the Cobbler", 18 September- Eylül 2012.)Today I'm sharing another scene from that film, the second longest scene I was ever to animate. The only one longer was to be Kebabaluba, our only independent film yet, which was a single scene. (See: "Kebabaluba", 10 September-Eylül 2010.)

The "dying messenger" scene takes close on to one entire minute of screen time, and if I remember correctly I worked on it for a month and a half! The year was 1990, we were living in London, I had to put in a regular 11-hour day, not counting the lunch breaks, and I was newly married- poor Lâle! Our director Richard Williams had a predilection for animation on "ones" (a new drawing for every frame, 24 drawings a second). However, the film had to be finished sometime so he instructed us to make our animation on "twos" (one drawing for every two frames coming to 12 drawings per second, except in exceptional cases) and to keep to that even if he said otherwise. I followed his instructions, but then he asked for a strong wind "like in a Kurosawa film" so for wind-blown elements like the flags, mane, tail, stirrups, I made my animation on another level, on ones, matching the character animation on twos.

Towards the end of the color version of the scene, lower screen left, you'll notice two characters who try to move only to collapse again. The first to move, further from camera, was animated by Mark Williams, my inbetweener at the time, the second, closer to camera, by Sharon Smith, who was my assistant. I don't know who animated the vultures.

The photo to the right shows the pile of drawings which is the finished scene with assistant Sharon Smith, myself, and inbetweener Mark Williams posing, tired but satisfied.

"HIRSIZ VE KUNDURACI"- "THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER"

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Richard Williams’ın The Thief and the Cobbler (“Hırsız ve Kunduracı”) filminin Londra’daki ekibine katıldığım 1990 Ekim ayında bu efsaneleşmiş prodüksyon 25 yaşına varmıştı. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (“Masum Sanık Roger Rabbit”)’in taze Oscar’lı animasyon yönetmeni Richard Williams, "Hırsız ve Kunduracı"’yı bitirmek için iki senelik bir kontrat kotarmıştı.

Mayıs 1991’in sonunda iyice yorulmuş olarak stüdyodan ayrıldım. Şahin daha uzun süre orada çalışmaya devam etti.

ENGLISH

The Richard Williams film The Thief and the Cobbler was already a legend when I joined the production in London in October 1990. The film had been in production, on and off, for about 25 years by that time and Richard Williams, fresh from his Oscar-winning animation direction of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, had obtained a contract to complete his epic in two years. My compatriot, the excellent animator Şahin Ersöz, also joined the team at around the same time and contributed some amazing scenes.

Unfortunately, Richard Williams could not meet his contractual deadline, and the film was completed by other studios, with great changes in the concept and a lot of scenes deleted because they were perceived as being extraneous to the story. There are various “completed” versions, released on video, that have little to do with the original vision. A few years ago, some enthusiasts salvaged the lost animation and cut together a version that is as close to the original concept as possible. They called it The Thief Recobbled, and just recently, much to my surprise, I saw that someone had put it on You-Tube. It brought back memories, of course, and so I decided to share one of my scenes with you here. I animated this character, and his horse, in all of their scenes. I left the studio, exhausted, at the end of May 1991. Şahin stayed on much longer.

"HOPATYA"

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

There is a wonderful kind of freedom that only hand-drawn animation can offer. You can spontaneously invent and infuse the illusion of life to anything you can can possibly imagine- right then and there, without having to bother with armatures and "rigs" in advance.

Back in the days when I was teaching animation, after the regular walk cycle assignments, I once asked the students to dream up a character with a very special means of locomotion, and to animate it. As is my custom, I animated my own version while they were working on theirs. This was the result.

There is an odd postscript to the story; one night I actually saw the creature in a dream, and learned that its name was "Hopatya" (an amalgamation of "to hop" and "papatya"= "daisy"). My subconscious had matched my absurd character to a suitably absurd name!
