TATLI BELÂ- SWEET POISON

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Drinking and tinkling copiously!

As I kept dashing into Swiss loos I was greeted by urinals that obnoxiously said "Laufen"; it means "to run".

The exceptional circumstances did not make the trip any less enjoyable. When we learned that a picture hanging in our room had been stolen from its frame, I drew this to replace it as a gesture of thanks to the Hotel de Savoie, for its warm hospitality stretching over the years.

Then in Brienz, Switzerland I drew this drawing for Frau Streich, the owner of the chalet we have rented repeatedly over the years, to express our appreciation for her friendly hospitality while commenting on how much we enjoy that environment with its mountains and trains

Kilo kaybettikçe tombul tavşan imajımı da elden geçirmek gündeme geldi. İyi haber, eşim Lâle'nin yıllar önce yaptığı, ama çoktandır küçük gelen kırmızı yeleğime tekrar girebilmem oldu!/ As I kept losing weight, I had to start considering revising my portly bunny image. An upside to all of this was that I could once againn fit into the red vest my wife Lâle had sewn for me years ago.

ENGLISH

It was a tough year.

The loss of my father was an even greater blow than I expected, and with it came problems so completely extraordinary, catching me so off my guard, that they just had to have their effect on my health. And they did!

It started mid-May with seemingly unquenchable thirst, which I attributed to the comming summer. Then I noticed I was rushing to the loo to tinkle far more frequently than ever. I had my mind set on making our usual trip to the animation festival in Annecy, France, following it up with our standard chalet holiday in Switzerland, and it occured to me that I was in no state to take the one-and-a-half hour bus ride from Geneva to Annecy, seeing I could only hold it for forty minutes tops! I went to the neighbourhood clinic for a quick solution and got some medication which later turned out to be wrong but helped me nevertheless- but only just! At the festival I could watch no screening to the end, but had to rush out once in the middle. I kept drinking and drinking and to make matters worse, it was the hottest weather we had ever experienced in Annecy. Still, barring the torture of the bus rides and the films I missed while peeing, we enjoyed both the festival and the following week we spent in our Alpine paradise in Switzerland, as we always do. On our return, after prevaricating a while longer, I finally consulted a doctor. Diabetes! Bye bye cake and chocolate, bye bye cheese fondue! Well, thanks to the diet and the medication, I am once againonce again tackle a longish bus ride and a regular film screening.

NE ZAMAN OLSA ÇOK ERKEN- IT'S ALWAYS TOO SOON

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

(Bkz: Tashlik, Eski Askerler.)

Babam emekli Hava Pilot Orgeneral ve emekli büyükelçi Nahit Özgür ve eşi, annem Fahrünnisa Özgür. My father, retired Air Force Pilot Full-General and Ambassador Nahit Özgür and his wife, my mother Fahrünnisa Özgür.

My father was among those sent to the US to witness a demonstration of the T-38 Talon jets that the Turkish Air Force was to acquire. My father did not actually pilot the two-seater during this flight, but I have a special affinity for this photo which he dedicated to me. "To my dear son Tasko" says the inscription, using my father's diminutive for me. Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama 1963.

This smiling picture of my father in ceremonial finery (white shirt and gloves plus sword) is one of my favorites, and he wears the three stars of a lieutenant general which places the date before August 1971.

Bitmemiş-Unfinished from tahsinozgur on Vimeo.

Berber muhabbeti eksik olmuyordu evde! Canlandırma öğrencisi olunca da bitirme projemin konusu baba oğul arasındaki bu saç uzatma/saç kestirme düellosu oldu. Filmi hiç tamamlayamadım, gerçek hayatta ise o çekişme saçımın dökülmesiyle sona erdi. İlk iki sahne 1982'de okulda yaptıklarımdandır, son ikisini ise sonradan, ama 1987'den önce, filmi tamamlamak ümidiyle yaptım.Şimdi bunlara bakmak zor geliyor!
My father was a soldier and appreciated a short military haircut, and I wanted to grow my hair. The topic of barbers and haircuts was always in the air in our home! When I went to animation school, I chose the theme of a father-son conflict over hair length for my final year project. I never completed the film. In real life the conflict died out when I lost my hair and turned bald. The first two scenes are from 1982, my last year at school, the last two are scenes I made later, in an attempt to complete the film, but all before 1987. It's hard to look at these scenes right now!

Sketch of my father in the emergency ward. He was very weak. Because he was always so chilly, he wore a cap to keep his head warm. After he passed away, my mother cleaned it and put it under his pillow, there to stay in his untouched bed.

Annem ve babam Kapri'de. Yıl 1953, daha çok gençler. Babam bir NATO göreviyle Napoli'ye tayin olmuştu.
My mother and father, still young, in Capri, 1953. My father was then appointed to a NATO position in Italy.

Asıl aşk resmi işte budur- hayatın öbür ucunda hastane odasında, babam bitkin yatıyor, annem dinlenmeye çalışıyor. Bunu sindiremeyen "seviyorum" demesin.
This is the truest image of love: at the close of a long life together, my father lies weak and frail, my mother tries to snatch a few minutes' rest. If you can't take this, stay away from this difficult and powerful business called love.

ENGLISH

When I shared my "old man" animation in my last blog entry dated April 28th, I mentioned my father, himself an elderly man, whose movements I had observed when making the animation. (See "Old Man", April 28th, 2014.) Just two weeks later, on the night of April 11th, we had to call an ambulance to get him to hospital.

I spent the night beside my father in the emergency ward of GATA, the military hospital in Istanbul. The hospital requires that a companion stay with the patient to care for immediate needs, but provides no seats in the emergency ward. There is a pair of small portable ladders, two steps each, as an aid for climbing onto the beds, and I nabbed one to sit on as an ersatz stool. I have a bag of necessities with me at all times, with a sketchbook in it, and I set about drawing my way through the difficult night. My father was receiving a serum through the arm, and drifting in and out of slumber. As I drew, the nurses, doctors, and the companions of the other invalids came and went, looking at what I was drawing and leafing through the sketchbook. In a lucid moment my father asked what they were looking at. I said: "they are looking at your son's pictures", still trying to impress him. The good man never used to ask to look at my drawings himself though I would be drawing as we chatted and I would occasionally force them on him. Come morning he called to ask me: "Do you have a son?" "No!" I said, "what makes you think that?" "You said people were looking at your son's pictures" he said. That gave me a jolt; "they were looking at the pictures of your son!" I replied, and showed him the sketchbook. He was hard of hearing, but this confusion of pronouns is easier to understand in Turkish than in English, and the word for drawing and picture is the same. But my wife and I have never been blessed with children, and it hurt me to see that, even at this extreme stage, my father had his hopes.

That morning, April 12th, my father was admitted into the hospital and taken to a private room. My mother stayed with him as companion, a 91 year old woman to care for a 94 year old man, but she would not have it any other way. Young people associating love with holding hands in the moonlight or holidays in Capri would do well to add the vision of vigils in hospital rooms at an advanced age, wiping sweat and feeding soup, refusing to pass this duty on to another. There I saw the persistent power of love. My father was taken to intensive care on the 16th, and my mother had nothing to do but go home- something she did with the greatest reluctance. From that day on, I went to the hospital every day, but was only allowed to look through a glass pane for a few minutes between 2:00 and 4:00 pm. And more often than not, my father was asleep. On April 23rd, the day declared by Ataturk as "Children's Holiday", he was awake. I waved at him, he waved back. Though we established eye contact, he probably could not make out who I was- his eyesight had been weak for some time. When an attendant told him I was his son, he registered surprise. (Didn't you expect me daddy? Or is it because this made you happy?) He seemed to be recovering so I grew hopeful, but I never saw him awake again. That wave, that last eye contact was a "Children's Holiday" gift from father to son. On May 1st, in the morning of a bright spring day, in perfect flight conditions with clear blue skies and calm weather, my father, the pilot, flew away. DEMO KASETİME GİRİŞ- DEMO INTRO

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Because my name sounds so odd and unpronouncable to non-Turkish ears, I thought it would be a handicap for job hunting in the wider world. I decided to turn the disadvantage into an advantage by making fun of it. I animated this as an introduction to my demo cassette sometime during my stint as animation instructor at Bilkent University, Ankara, which would place it between 1991 and 1995. I know because the voice belongs to one of our neighbors there, a British lady named Rachel who also was also teaching at Bilkent.

KASA HIRSIZARI- SAFE ROBBERS

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

I don't exactly remember when I made these two pieces of animation, but I believe it was around the year 2000. The idea was to demonstrate that different styles of animation require the creation of different animation "universes" with their own physical rules, impossibilities and plausibilities. A blow that can kill our character in one animation "universe" will only stun him in another. Exaggeration should not be used gratuitously, mixing different styles, different universes, within a project may lead to an unsatisfying, even annoying viewing experience. Here I interpreted the same small episode- passing on a stolen safe- in two different styles; the first is more restrained, closer to reality, the second more "cartoony".

KARGA BİLE GÜLER- EVEN CROWS LAUGH

TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

In Turkish, "even the crows laugh" is an idiom expressing a blatant, painfully obvious absurdity. That a party notorious for corrupting justice to remove potential political enemies and building up a retrograde fundamentalist consumer society on borrowed money could call itself "The Party for Justice and Progress" is just such an absurdity. Sadly, crows are more observant than much of the voting public. I made this animation before the elections of 2011, strictly personally, and shared it with friends and acquaintances online. Now, with the municipal elections approaching (the day after tomorrow) I've decided to share it again here. The croaking laughter is my own voice.

ÖNCE YÜRÜMEYİ ÖĞRENMEK- LEARNING TO WALK FIRST

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

During the times I taught animation, I would animate sample scenes to demonsttrate certain points and aspects to my students. I made this series of walk cycles- going from too little to too much- most probably during my stint at Bilkent University, Ankara, though I'm not quite sure. If it dates from my Bilkent years, it would be before 1995. The opening animation of the words "Tips for Tash" on the disc is more recent- October 2013- and I meant it to be a standard title to present all such animation scenes I made for demonstration purposes.

Another year over, but what a year it was this time. The past decade in Turkey was like being trapped in a interminable B movie that's a strange mixture of horror, adventure, whodunnit and espionage genres. 2013 saw a flash of hope with the June uprising, also known popularly as the Gezi resistance, after the name of the park that was at once the reason and the focus of the sensational public show of defiance against a repressive and regressive regime. It was not possible to choose another theme for this year's new year message! Illustration: Tahsin ("Tash") Özgür, color design by Lâle Özgür. ÇİZGİ FİLM BAYRAMI- HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

Remember those anxious years when CG animation was becoming increasingly popular, theratening to push hand-drawn animation completely off the screens? That's when we dreamed up the idea of a "Cartoon Animation Day" or "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", to remind people of the very particular beauty of drawings that move. The celebrations would be held on November 18th, commemorating the 1928 release of Steamboat Willie, considered the first Mickey Mouse film and the first cartoon conceived and made as a sound film. We hoped to spread the idea, our friend Rıdvan Çevik, teaching animation at Anadolu University, Eskişehir, tried to turn it into a day of activities at his school, and when I and my wife started teaching at Maltepe University, Istanbul, we tried to do the same. (See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", Sept. 10th, 2010.) But after trying for a few years in a row, we saw that the idea wasn't catching on. Now, with even our national celebrations under threat, our caprice of a day for hand-drawn animation seems childish and unimportant. (Compatriots will know what I am talking about!) Today I got a phone call from Çevik in Eskişehir; he was wishing us a "happy Hand-Drawn Animation Day". The best word for my feelings would be: bittersweet. We marched for October 29th, Republic Day, we marched for November 10th, anniversary of Ataturk's decease, because we were against the government's push to make us forget them. I felt I had to do something for our own November 18th, once so important to me because I wanted to keep people from forgetting the art and craft I loved. As it happens, I had left a cassette containing some animation work at a photo shop to be transferred on disc and was due to pick them up today. I decided to share some old animation in honor of the occasion. I picked this one; I had animated it at Hahn Film in Berlin back in 1995 or '96. The concept and character belong to Swiss artist Ted Sieger. I feel it's a good example of the kind of freedom and liveliness that makes hand-drawn animation special. Pure flip-power!
