KAHVALTIDA AYDINLANMA- ENLIGHTENMENT AT BREAKFAST

Tercih ettiğimiz gazete Aydınlık satışlarını arttırabilmek için bir kampanya başlatmıştı; bu kampanya faaliyetlerinden biri de, okuyucuların Aydınlık okurken kendi fotoğraflarını çekerek gazeteye göndermeleriydi. Lâle bizim de katılmamızı önerdi. 

Kendimizi kahvaltıda Aydınlık okurken görüntüleyecektik- ama tabii ki sanatçı/ çizgifilmci kimliğimize uygun şekilde, çizilmiş olarak. Kamerayı tripoda bağladık ve kahvaltı masamızı önce boş çektik, sonra kamerayı hiç oynatmadan gazete okur pozda kendimiz de kadra girerek çektik. Üçüncü bir fotoğrafta ben kahve fincanını havada tuttum.

Sonra çekilen fotoğrafların içine yerleşecek şekilde figürleri çizdim.


Renk konusunda Lâle'ye danışarak resmi renklendirdim, taradım ve bilgisayarımdaki hazır programda unsurları birleştirdim.
 

Sonucu gazetenin verdiği e-posta adresine gönderdik. Ve tekrar tekrar gönderdik; her defasında "iletilemedi" mesajı geldi. Ulaştıramadık yani!

Bir kere Facebook'da paylaştık, şimdi de burada paylaşıyoruz. Bizim tercih ettiğimiz gazetedir, bizi aydınlatır, 
öneririz!

"Hata Yaptık"
Ergenekon suçlamalarının büyük bir sahtekârlık olduğunu itiraf etmeye yaklaşan bazı sözleri ağzından kaçırınca büyük bir keyifle, tadını çıkara çıkara yine böyle bir çalışma yapıp yayınlamıştım. (Bkz. "Hatasız Kul Olmaz", Tashlık, 12 Şubat 2014.)




ENGLISH

There is a wide spectum of newspapers you can choose from in Turkey, from far left to to extreme right, from seperatist to fanatical fundamentalist. We find the right balance in Aydınlık ("light", in the sense of the opposite of "darkness"), a newspaper that opposes all the parties presently in parliament. It has minimal income from advertising because advertisers are wary of government pressure. 

Aydınlık launched a campaign to increase its readership; one aspect of the campaign involved having your own photograph taken while reading the paper and sending it in. Lâle and I decided to contribute with a photo of ourselves studying the paper at breakfast, but in our own style. We would be hand-drawn, inside a real photo, reading a real newspaper. We attached the camera to a tripod, and shot the breakfast table empty, then with ourselves looking at the paper, and a third one where I am holding my coffee cup in the air.

I then drew the figures in position. I coloured the drawings by consulting Lâle for the colors.

Then I put them all together with the program that came with my computer.  

We sent the photograph to the e-mail address given by the newspaper. We tried over and over again but kept getting "delivery failure" notices. It never got through!

We shared it on Facebook. Now we are shareing it here. Aydınlık is our preferred newspaper, and we recommend it! It enlightens us!

Placing handdrawn figures inside a photograph of a real environment is a fussy and difficult business, but I enjoy it nevertheless. I did this once before with the Aydınlık
"We Made a Mistake"
newspaper- when Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ let it slip that the absurd Ergenekon case was a hoax. This was the first official admission of what we had for so long been saying and demonstrating for, so it was with exceptional pleasure that I prepared the image. The headline says "we made a mistake", quoting the minister.

YENİ YILA GİRERKEN- COMING INTO THE NEW YEAR

Yeni yıl akşamını kendi evimizde arkadaşlarımızla geçirdik- Türk canlandırmasından seçme bir grup aileleriyle birlikte bir çatı altında toplanmış oldu- toplam beş çocuk da gerekli ses efektlerini tedarik ettiler.

Zor olsa da bu sıcak ve neşeli ortamdan kendimi bir süre kopararak eski geleneğimi sürdürdüm: senelerdir yeni yıla elimde kalem, çizerek, imkân el verirse canlandırma yaparak girerim ve bu sene de öyle yaptım. Odama dalıp çıkan üç azgın oğlan çocuğu bile beni dağıtmadı! Bu sene bir seferlik bir fikir seçmedim, çok ağır ilerleyen özel film çalışmamıza biraz katkı olsun diye filmden yeni bir sahneye başladım. Bir karakterin iki saniye kadar kaba canlandırmasını yaparak çekmeyi başardım (54 kare; klipte sol üst köşede yıldız olan kısım), gerisini iki gün sonra, 3 Ocak'ta tamamladım. İki karakter daha gelecek, sonra efekt, sonra da temiz çizim. Günün birinde biter belki!

Geceyarısını geçip yeni yıla girince sıra fotoğraflara geldi. Grup resmi çekme işini Murat üstlendi- "aile resmi" de diyebiliriz! Birkaç düzgün fotoğraftan sonra ortalık biraz karıştı, cıvıttık yani! Birkaç gün sonra Murat bize fotoğrafları internet üzerinden gönderince Lâle onlardan bir montaj yapmamı, ama bu montajda resimleri tersine doğru sıralamamı önerdi. Böylece bir kaostan bir huzur ortamına geçecektik. Netice beklemediğim kadar nostaljik tatta birşey oldu- daha henüz dört gün geçmesine rağmen. Fon müziği olarak Abba'nın Happy New Year ("Mutlu bir Yeni Yıl") isimli parçasını koyunca bu hercailik hissi daha da kuvvetlendi. Şarkının daha ilerisinde "...bizi 10 yıl sonra, 1989'un sonunda ne bekliyor?" diye soruyor, demek şarkı 1979 dan! O kadar oldu mu? Hele şu sözler, özellikle yaşadığımız günlerde daha da manidar: "...Hepimiz zaman zaman da olsa her komşunun birer arkadaş olduğu bir dünyayı hayal edebilsek... hepimizin ümitleri ve deneyecek gücü olsa, yoksa yatıp ölelim daha iyi...!" 

 
2016 yeni yıl gecesi canlandırma çalışmam. Lâle özel filmimizden hiçbir şeyi göstermememi istiyor, ama bu kadarcıkla pek bir şeyi açık ettiğimi zannetmiyorum!

  2016'nın ilk dakikaları, evimizde yakın dostlarımızla. Fotoğraflar Murat'ın objektifinden, montajı ben yaptım, fikir Lâle'nin, müzik de tabii ki Abba.

We spent new year's eve at home with our friends; some of the finest of Turkish animation were assembled under one roof with their families- with a total of  five children providing the necessary background noise. 

In spite of the good company, I managed to retreat to my room long enough to maintain my tradition of entering the new year with my pencil in hand, drawing, preferably animating. Not even the three wild boys charging in and out of my room could faze me. I didn't go for a one-off idea this time, but started a new scene for our very slow moving private short film. I managed to rough in and shoot about two seconds of one character (54 frames; the part with the star on the upper left corner in the clip), the rest I completeded two days later, on January 3rd. There will be two more characters, plus effects, and then cleanup- it will be finished someday.

Once past midnight and into the new year it was a time for photos, and Murat took on the job of snapping a group photo- a "family picture", so to speak. After a few tries, everything went a little bit crazy. When Murat sent us the photos over the net, Lâle suggested I edit them together, but in the reverse order, so that the images transition from mayhem into a state of tranquility. The result looks nostalgic already, and it's only four days on! I put a bit of Abba's Happy New Year as background music and that even heightened the transitory feel. Further on the song goes "...Who can say what we'll find/ What lies waiting down the line/ In the end of eighty-nine...", so it must be from 1979!  Has it really been that long? And even more foreboding, considering the times we live in: "....Happy new year, happy new year/ May we all have a vision now and then/ Of a world where every neighbor is a friend/ Happy new year, happy new year /May we all have our hopes, our will to try/ If we don't we might as well lay down and die...!"

Yeniyıl havasına kaptırıyoruz kendimizi; sokaklar süsleniyor, televizyonda radyoda reklâmlar parayla, olmadı krediyle mutluluk satın almaya teşvik ediyor, Noel'in kutlandığı ülkelerde ise insancıl mesajlı hikâyeler tekrar anlatılıyor... bir yandan komşu ülkelerde bizim de ufak ufak bulaştığımız korkunç bir iç savaş, yaşanmaz hâle gelmiş şehirler, oralardan kaçan, daha iyi bir hayat ümidiyle yüzlerce kilometre yürüyen, lastik botlarda telef olan, ulaşabilseler de gittikleri ülkelerde istenmeyen insanlar. Zaten bir zamandır kendi öz iç savaşımız da başladı, aldı yürüyor. Hâla birşeyleri kutlayacak hâli olan var mı? Suriye'de başı kesilmekten kaçarken umut yolunda boğulan Ege'de boğulan çocuklar varken Noel Baba masalları anlatılabilir mi?

The holiday season is upon us; it is already Advent in the Western World, with Christmas only a week off. Then comes the New Year, with jubilation and fireworks. TV and radio commercials tell us to shop ourselves into a state of happiness. Those observing Christmas are already retelling humane parables. Meanwhile, a vicious civil war rages just beyond our borders, often spilling over. Crowds of people flee devastated cities, trek thousands of kilometers and brave open seas in rubber boats in hope of a better life in lands that ultimately don't want them! Meanwhile, keeping up with the neighbors, we now have our very own civil war going on. Does anyone still feel like celebrating anything? Can we go on telling Santa Claus stories when children escaping beheading in Syria end up drowning in the Aegean?

This is our excuse for the cheerless drawing on our new year message this year.

There but for the grace of God go I- and you- and we all!

HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY 2015

I designed Biki for use in my class notes and animation demonstrations, and this jaunty walk cycle dates from that time (between 1992 and 1995). I decided to put it here to represent the free spirit that is at the heart of hand-drawn animation.

On November 18th 1928 the moviegoing public met Mickey Mouse for the first time. The film, Steamboat Willie, is considered the first animated film with synchronized sound. And the mouse has become, for all intents and purposes, the symbol of the art of hand-drawn animation. 

In the frustrating days when CG was driving hand-drawn animation into a corner, we thought of introducing a special day to celebrate that endangered art form which had, after all, given the world so many masterpieces over the century. At the time there was a distinct effort to force the hand-drawn technique into obsolescence by persuading public opinion that CG had superseded it. Even the celebrated Walt Disney company betrayed its heritage and disbanded the select crew that had created some of the best loved films over decades.

I see hand-drawn animation as an artistic tradition of its own, and CG animation as a completely new tradition, made possible by amazing new developments in technology. One is not the primitive and superseded form of the other, nor is the other the advanced and superior form of the first! Both are as valid as classical music, jazz, and rock which coexist, overlap, but never negate each other. That is why we proposed a "Hand-Drawn Animation Day" to celebrate hand-drawn animation alone, to be observed on November 18th, the anniversary of the day Mickey met his public. (Let CG and stop-motion animators have their own special days, to call attention to what is special about their traditions.) 

Rıdvan Çevik organized the first Day for Hand-Drawn Animation at Anadolu University in Eskişehir on November 18th 2005, and next year, in 2006, I was organizing a parallel celebration at Maltepe University, Istanbul.

The students responded well to "Hand-Drawn Animation Day" and our friends who were working professionally lent enthusiastic support. It felt as if we were on to something.

However the administrations of the schools were less than supportive. In 2009, Maltepe turned the event into something to encompass all techniques, called it "Animation Celebration", and moved the date (to 1-4 December). Lâle and I nevertheless celebrated on the day, and our friends from the professional world came in a demonstration of solidarity.

After that, I observed "Hand-Drawn Animation day" through personal messages, and by watching some classics on my own. Our friends abroad did not sieze upon the idea either. Soon I gave up on it. I only mentioned it twice in this blog, the last time in 2013. (See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", 18 March 2010"Hand-Drawn Animation Day", 18 Nov 2013.)

Then last year (2014) friends from home and abroad sent messages congratulating my "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", I even got someeven from friends from outside the animation world. I was genuinely touched. We got together at the home of our friends, Erhan and Leyla Gezen, joined by Murat and Ceylan Çelik. Erhan and Murat showed their "teacher" their recent work, which made me proud, like my life had been worthwhile after all. I have suffered since then the loss of James ("Jim") Macaulay, my teacher at Sheridan College passed away. I had been corresponding with him and his passing has made the world a bit lonelier. (See: "James Macaulay", 7 April 2015.) It was, however, an occasion to reestablish contact with some schoolmates, and even graduates I had not personally met.

The last year also surprised us with pleasant reunions with people we had met in course of a lifetime in animation. Our friend Oliver Acker, whom I had met at Walt Disney Paris, visited us in June. We spent a plesant day at the seaside Fenerbahçe Park and at our home. (See: http://Oliveracker.me.)

In September who showed up but colorful Nurten İz? This remarkable lady had entered Turkey's nascent advertising sector purely because of her love for the  Disney films, and worked for years in trace and paint. We hadn't seen each other for 28 years! It was a very nice visit. No one would believe she is an octagenarian; her unaging vitality rejuvenated us.

Rıdvan Çevik, our friend and colleague (and one-time intern at Esin Desen), invited us to the opening of an exhibition of his animation drawings at the "Museum of Caricature" in Eskişehir. The theme of the exhibition was "Caricature of Motion", connecting well with the identity of the museum. His animation drawings on display in a cultural surrounding and a screen showing them in motion constituted a fine effort towards gaining respectibility for our Art. (For Rıdvan's work see: çevikçizgifilmci.blogspot.com.) So we drove there and that was another pleasant reunion.

One of our best students  at Maltepe University was Merve Atılgan. When she came to the school she was already on her way towards proficiency in another field: she was (and is) a ballerina. She surprised us with a visit in October and brought along samples of her work- which were very impressive. I had told her that people in the animation business had to be able to adapt to different styles and it seems she took my words seriously, having developed into a prolific and versatile illustrator. The thought that we may have had some small part in her artistic development made us very happy and proud. (See: https://www.behance.net/mervmee)

Some family business took us to the US and I used the forced trip as an occasion to see another old friend- David Nethery, my schoolmate from my days as an animation student at Sheridan College. We had a looooong chat, being understandably reluctant to part after such a long time- 33 years to be exact.

Being in the US right now, and being just north of Florida, we will just have to visit Walt Disney World. We have a trip planned for the coming weekend- just four days after Hand-Drawn Animation Day! Very appropiate!

So now it's time for us to wish all our friends a happy and cheerful Hand-Drawn Animation Day. Watch something hand-drawn today! If you don't have time to dig out anything else, just watch this latest work of master animator Glen Keane  produced in 2015.

And remember why it was always such a special experience!
