"TARZAN"'DA BUNLARI GÖRMEMİŞTİNİZ- YOU NEVER SAW THESE IN "TARZAN"

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Yönetmenler Kevin Lima ve Chris Buck'ın Georges'a gönderdiği yazı.

The sequence including the controversial mirror scene and the barrel solution which replaced it all.

ENGLISH

One big plus of playing blogging is to be able to share work that has never reached audiences. I am now availing myself of this opportunity to share three of my Tarzan scenes that were discarded.

The ship that is to return that intrepid group of explorers, Prof. Porter, Jane and Clayton, back home to England, has arrived. Crewmen are breaking up the camp and busily packing and carrying their things home. Tarzan arrives with a bouquet of flowers he has gathered for Jane and stops short when he sees the commotion. Then he notices three other Tarzans approaching him from the side. It is really a large three-wing mirror carried by a burly crew member. (Why would anybody schlep such a unwieldy piece of furniture to the jungles of Africa?  Anyway!) With his agility he manages to duck and pass under it but as soon as he gets up he is jostled by someone carrying something else.

I received the storyboards and layouts. For the mirror scene I was only expected to daw three Tarzans; they would be integrated into a 3D animated mirror during compositing.

Ever the fussy wokaholic, I declared my wish and intention to animate the mirror as well, to be used as a guide, reasoning that I could not animate Tarzan convincingly without seeing how the mirror moved. Of course this meant I would animate the reflected image as a reflected image, shifting in harmony with the movement of the mirror. I even animated a simplified graphic on the mirror to indicate how the BG behind Tarzan would shift on the reflecting surface, in harmony with the movement. My first rough animation was approved.

Then Georges Abolin, the animator who was working on the hookup scene just prior to mine, got a message from the directors. We worked in the same room, so naturally I saw the message.

Message from Kevin Lima and Chris Buck to animator Georges Abolin.

If Georges was to animate his scene according to the directors' wishes, Tarzan would be looking left to see a mirror approaching from his right. (Because while entering the field of the mirror, the reflected images, as I drew them, were looking to their right, which would mean the real Tarzan was looking to his left, this being a mirror and all!) I just had to put in my two cents worth; I drew a sketch and sent it to the directors in both our names.
Explanatory sketch I sent to the directors, as coming from both myself and Georges. You can see the angle Tarzan's reflection enters the mirror surface in my earliest rough animation. The directors were asking that Tarzan should be seen looking to his right in the preceding hookup scene.
(If you read my notes, you will notice that at one point I too became confused enough
to  writte "left" instead of "right"!)

This started a whole debate on mirrors, reflections, and the expectations of the viewers. There was even a question as to which hand the reflected Tarzans would be using to hold the bouquet. We were in the Paris studio, the directors were in Los Angeles, and the time difference made the discussion difficult and time-consuming.

Balloo reflected in a pond in the 1967 Disney film The Jungle Book. Whether the real Balloo or the reflected one, it's the left eye that is bloated; a decision which purportedly takes the "viewers' expectations" into account. During the days of the mirror discussion it was my friend and colleague Oliver Acker who called my attention to this. He said it had bothered him as a child. I admit I hadn't noticed it before. He is German, by the way.

Finally I (we) managed to persuade the directors. I tied down my scene and animated the following two. They too were approved and tied down. I was just about to have the sequence out of my hands and in the film when...
This whole question of left side, right side, what we really see, what the viewers expects to see must have been simmering over in Los Angeles; I received the bad news that my three scenes had been scrapped. In the new version a crewman would be rolling barrels, which would bump into Tarzan who would jump on them, scramble to regain his balance within the narrow space available on the layout, and jump off screen. Within the Disney hierarchy, things like barrels are traditionally the lot of effects animators, but it would be nonsensical to try to animate Tarzan without seeing what the barrels would be doing, so I animated the barrels as well, and the man rolling them. The rest of the people milling around are by other animators.

PAZARYERİNDE FUTBOL- SOCCER IN THE MARKETPLACE

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Bkz. www.ersoz.com .

From time to time I sift through my cassettes to salvage old animation, and some of them I share with you. This time I have another scene from Werner Beinhart (1990). I shared another on October 28th 2014 ; see "Bikers on the Road."
I worked on that film back in 1989-90, and was even credited as head animator (chefanimator) though there was a whole section made in Hamburg towards which I had absolutely no contribution at all. Looking back, I can't help reflecting on what a happy, exciting time it was. The Berlin wall was cracking open, the world was going through a historic change and we were right at the hub of it, incongruously occupied with a cartoon about drunken motorcyclists. From the scenes I am sharing you can see how loose and free the animation style was. Maybe they look that way because I was so relaxed and confident when I made them.

In this section of the movie our hero Werner flings a soccer ball out of his apartment window down to a market area. The ball bounces off things and gets kicked around by the shoppers and vendors, resulting in a soccer match- except that the "players" are unaware of the game. The spectators consist of birds on the surrounding roofs and of course Werner himself who delivers a continuous commentary like a sports reporter.

The crew included the gifted Turkish animator Şahin Ersöz. Animation came so naturally to him, he produced so fast, so effortlessly, with so much exuberance and life, that he easily qualifies as a genius in the art. See: www.ersoz.com

YOLDA MOTORCULAR- BIKERS ON THE ROAD

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

geliyor.

ENGLISH

Back in 1989-90, while the famous Berlin wall was shaking and crumbling, a small studio in the same city was hard at work on the production of a silly comedy that had no connection with the world-shaking event so near. Werner Beinhart (1990) was based on a popular comic book, and I had been given the position of animation director. Oblivious to the world changing just beyond the studio doors, our characters never wavered from their only two interests in the world: beer and bikes!

I took advantage of my position to secure some juicy scenes for myself. I wanted very much to animate this scene in the way I envisioned it. (I had boarded the sequence myself.) I did all of the animation, including most of the rough inbetweening. I only passed on roadside details like signposts for inbetweening. Now, when digging this scene up, I found some pencil tests dating from the time and I cut them to the beginning of the clip to demonstrate the thinking process. I animated the road first- a simple cycle, or rather two for the most part, but the viewpoint switches from about waist level, to show the beer can changing hands, to a lower angle from which the bikes will look more imposing. Of course, this change of angle needed to be incorporated smoothly into the cycles.

Travelling with my family as a child, I used to sit in the front of our '59 Mercedes 220 S, next to my father, and had plenty of time to observe the road flowing towards us beyond the windshield. I reconnected with that experience a lot in making this scene, particularly when the bikes veer off to the right at the turnout (including the tell-tale tire tracks of a vehicle that couldn't make the turn).

I animated the bikes on threes and when inbetweening added in a three-frame squash and stretch in and around the rear wheel area to simulate the vibration of the motor. The sausages shooting out of the handlebar quotes a joke about a "sausage signal" earlier in the sequence. (German sausage humor!) The film had reached post-production stage when the studio decided to add dialogue to the scene, which is why there is no lip-synch and we hear Werner's voice even while he is downing his beer.

BALYOZ- SLEDGEHAMMER

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH
The "Sledgehammer Coup Plot" allegation first hit the public in the face on January 20th, 2010, with the bombastic headline of a newsrag named Taraf. The headline went "They were going to bomb the Fatih mosque". According to the newspaper, the Turkish Armed Forces had been plotting a secret operation, codename "Sledgehammer" (Balyoz) with the aim of creating a climate of anarchy as an excuse for staging a coup. Taraf claimed the Armed Forces were willing to bomb our own mosque and shoot one of our own planes to reach this end. What followed was a widespread roundup of officers, recalling the similarly unfounded "Ergenekon Terror Organization" witchhunts that had preceded it. It was clear and obvious to many, including myself, that the true target was the secular Turkish Republic, as founded by Ataturk, and the Armed Forces that were sworn to defend it. The lie could be mantained only so long. The "Sledgehammer" inmates were released starting June 19th, 2014, less than two years after being condemned to long sentences, including life, on September 20th, 2012. Similarly, the Ergenekon inmates had been released en masse this past March 7th. One would think the AKP government would suffer a severe loss of credibility after the collapse of allegations it so strongly backed, but amazingly, prime minister Erdoğan managed to shift the entire bame on erstwhile partner in crime Fethullah Gülen, the "Imam of Pennsylvania", and his "Community". Now the whitewashed prime minister is running for presidency. I made the animation above prior to the constitutional referendum of September 12th, 2010. At the time the AKP government was soliciting extensive constitutional amendments in order to strengthen its own hand in transforming the secular Turkish Republic into an Islamist theocracy, exploiting the specter of a military coup in order to execute a civilian one. I freely used the "sledgehammer" image, so topical at the time. I then sent this animaton to friends and acquaintances by e-mail. The first caption says "Now it's in the hands of the electorate", the second one says "a civilian response to a civilian coup" followed by "no", the third says "to the ballot box for the response". The larger part of the electorate chose to support the AKP's amendments nevertheless.

NE ZAMAN OLSA ÇOK ERKEN- IT'S ALWAYS TOO SOON

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

(Bkz: Tashlik, Eski Askerler.)

Babam emekli Hava Pilot Orgeneral ve emekli büyükelçi Nahit Özgür ve eşi, annem Fahrünnisa Özgür. My father, retired Air Force Pilot Full-General and Ambassador Nahit Özgür and his wife, my mother Fahrünnisa Özgür.

My father was among those sent to the US to witness a demonstration of the T-38 Talon jets that the Turkish Air Force was to acquire. My father did not actually pilot the two-seater during this flight, but I have a special affinity for this photo which he dedicated to me. "To my dear son Tasko" says the inscription, using my father's diminutive for me. Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama 1963.

This smiling picture of my father in ceremonial finery (white shirt and gloves plus sword) is one of my favorites, and he wears the three stars of a lieutenant general which places the date before August 1971.

Bitmemiş-Unfinished from tahsinozgur on Vimeo.

Berber muhabbeti eksik olmuyordu evde! Canlandırma öğrencisi olunca da bitirme projemin konusu baba oğul arasındaki bu saç uzatma/saç kestirme düellosu oldu. Filmi hiç tamamlayamadım, gerçek hayatta ise o çekişme saçımın dökülmesiyle sona erdi. İlk iki sahne 1982'de okulda yaptıklarımdandır, son ikisini ise sonradan, ama 1987'den önce, filmi tamamlamak ümidiyle yaptım.Şimdi bunlara bakmak zor geliyor!
My father was a soldier and appreciated a short military haircut, and I wanted to grow my hair. The topic of barbers and haircuts was always in the air in our home! When I went to animation school, I chose the theme of a father-son conflict over hair length for my final year project. I never completed the film. In real life the conflict died out when I lost my hair and turned bald. The first two scenes are from 1982, my last year at school, the last two are scenes I made later, in an attempt to complete the film, but all before 1987. It's hard to look at these scenes right now!

My mother and father, still young, in Capri, 1953. My father was then appointed to a NATO position in Italy.

Asıl aşk resmi işte budur- hayatın öbür ucunda hastane odasında, babam bitkin yatıyor, annem dinlenmeye çalışıyor. Bunu sindiremeyen "seviyorum" demesin.
This is the truest image of love: at the close of a long life together, my father lies weak and frail, my mother tries to snatch a few minutes' rest. If you can't take this, stay away from this difficult and powerful business called love.

ENGLISH

When I shared my "old man" animation in my last blog entry dated April 28th, I mentioned my father, himself an elderly man, whose movements I had observed when making the animation. (See "Old Man", April 28th, 2014.) Just two weeks later, on the night of April 11th, we had to call an ambulance to get him to hospital.

I spent the night beside my father in the emergency ward of GATA, the military hospital in Istanbul. The hospital requires that a companion stay with the patient to care for immediate needs, but provides no seats in the emergency ward. There is a pair of small portable ladders, two steps each, as an aid for climbing onto the beds, and I nabbed one to sit on as an ersatz stool. I have a bag of necessities with me at all times, with a sketchbook in it, and I set about drawing my way through the difficult night. My father was receiving a serum through the arm, and drifting in and out of slumber. As I drew, the nurses, doctors, and the companions of the other invalids came and went, looking at what I was drawing and leafing through the sketchbook. In a lucid moment my father asked what they were looking at. I said: "they are looking at your son's pictures", still trying to impress him. The good man never used to ask to look at my drawings himself though I would be drawing as we chatted and I would occasionally force them on him. Come morning he called to ask me: "Do you have a son?" "No!" I said, "what makes you think that?" "You said people were looking at your son's pictures" he said. That gave me a jolt; "they were looking at the pictures of your son!" I replied, and showed him the sketchbook. He was hard of hearing, but this confusion of pronouns is easier to understand in Turkish than in English, and the word for drawing and picture is the same. But my wife and I have never been blessed with children, and it hurt me to see that, even at this extreme stage, my father had his hopes.

That morning, April 12th, my father was admitted into the hospital and taken to a private room. My mother stayed with him as companion, a 91 year old woman to care for a 94 year old man, but she would not have it any other way. Young people associating love with holding hands in the moonlight or holidays in Capri would do well to add the vision of vigils in hospital rooms at an advanced age, wiping sweat and feeding soup, refusing to pass this duty on to another. There I saw the persistent power of love. My father was taken to intensive care on the 16th, and my mother had nothing to do but go home- something she did with the greatest reluctance. From that day on, I went to the hospital every day, but was only allowed to look through a glass pane for a few minutes between 2:00 and 4:00 pm. And more often than not, my father was asleep. On April 23rd, the day declared by Ataturk as "Children's Holiday", he was awake. I waved at him, he waved back. Though we established eye contact, he probably could not make out who I was- his eyesight had been weak for some time. When an attendant told him I was his son, he registered surprise. (Didn't you expect me daddy? Or is it because this made you happy?) He seemed to be recovering so I grew hopeful, but I never saw him awake again. That wave, that last eye contact was a "Children's Holiday" gift from father to son. On May 1st, in the morning of a bright spring day, in perfect flight conditions with clear blue skies and calm weather, my father, the pilot, flew away. DEMO KASETİME GİRİŞ- DEMO INTRO

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Because my name sounds so odd and unpronouncable to non-Turkish ears, I thought it would be a handicap for job hunting in the wider world. I decided to turn the disadvantage into an advantage by making fun of it. I animated this as an introduction to my demo cassette sometime during my stint as animation instructor at Bilkent University, Ankara, which would place it between 1991 and 1995. I know because the voice belongs to one of our neighbors there, a British lady named Rachel who also was also teaching at Bilkent.

KASA HIRSIZARI- SAFE ROBBERS

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

I don't exactly remember when I made these two pieces of animation, but I believe it was around the year 2000. The idea was to demonstrate that different styles of animation require the creation of different animation "universes" with their own physical rules, impossibilities and plausibilities. A blow that can kill our character in one animation "universe" will only stun him in another. Exaggeration should not be used gratuitously, mixing different styles, different universes, within a project may lead to an unsatisfying, even annoying viewing experience. Here I interpreted the same small episode- passing on a stolen safe- in two different styles; the first is more restrained, closer to reality, the second more "cartoony".

KARGA BİLE GÜLER- EVEN CROWS LAUGH

TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

In Turkish, "even the crows laugh" is an idiom expressing a blatant, painfully obvious absurdity. That a party notorious for corrupting justice to remove potential political enemies and building up a retrograde fundamentalist consumer society on borrowed money could call itself "The Party for Justice and Progress" is just such an absurdity. Sadly, crows are more observant than much of the voting public. I made this animation before the elections of 2011, strictly personally, and shared it with friends and acquaintances online. Now, with the municipal elections approaching (the day after tomorrow) I've decided to share it again here. The croaking laughter is my own voice.

ÖNCE YÜRÜMEYİ ÖĞRENMEK- LEARNING TO WALK FIRST

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

During the times I taught animation, I would animate sample scenes to demonsttrate certain points and aspects to my students. I made this series of walk cycles- going from too little to too much- most probably during my stint at Bilkent University, Ankara, though I'm not quite sure. If it dates from my Bilkent years, it would be before 1995. The opening animation of the words "Tips for Tash" on the disc is more recent- October 2013- and I meant it to be a standard title to present all such animation scenes I made for demonstration purposes.

VE YENİ YIL- AND THE NEW YEAR

TÜRKÇE  (For English please scroll down.)

Another year over, but what a year it was this time. The past decade in Turkey was like being trapped in a interminable B movie that's a strange mixture of horror, adventure, whodunnit and espionage genres. 2013 saw a flash of hope with the June uprising, also known popularly as the Gezi resistance, after the name of the park that was at once the reason and the focus of the sensational public show of defiance against a repressive and regressive regime. It was not possible to choose another theme for this year's new year message! Illustration: Tahsin ("Tash") Özgür, color design by Lâle Özgür. ÇİZGİ FİLM BAYRAMI- HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

Remember those anxious years when CG animation was becoming increasingly popular, theratening to push hand-drawn animation completely off the screens? That's when we dreamed up the idea of a "Cartoon Animation Day" or "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", to remind people of the very particular beauty of drawings that move. The celebrations would be held on November 18th, commemorating the 1928 release of Steamboat Willie, considered the first Mickey Mouse film and the first cartoon conceived and made as a sound film. We hoped to spread the idea, our friend Rıdvan Çevik, teaching animation at Anadolu University, Eskişehir, tried to turn it into a day of activities at his school, and when I and my wife started teaching at Maltepe University, Istanbul, we tried to do the same. (See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", Sept. 10th, 2010.) But after trying for a few years in a row, we saw that the idea wasn't catching on. Now, with even our national celebrations under threat, our caprice of a day for hand-drawn animation seems childish and unimportant. (Compatriots will know what I am talking about!) Today I got a phone call from Çevik in Eskişehir; he was wishing us a "happy Hand-Drawn Animation Day". The best word for my feelings would be: bittersweet. We marched for October 29th, Republic Day, we marched for November 10th, anniversary of Ataturk's decease, because we were against the government's push to make us forget them. I felt I had to do something for our own November 18th, once so important to me because I wanted to keep people from forgetting the art and craft I loved. As it happens, I had left a cassette containing some animation work at a photo shop to be transferred on disc and was due to pick them up today. I decided to share some old animation in honor of the occasion. I picked this one; I had animated it at Hahn Film in Berlin back in 1995 or '96. The concept and character belong to Swiss artist Ted Sieger. I feel it's a good example of the kind of freedom and liveliness that makes hand-drawn animation special. Pure flip-power!
