Ressam Bülent Turan’ı 19 Nisan 2021’de kaybettik. (Hayır Korona değil, kâlp!)

Bülent ve Sedef Turan çifti ile tanışıklığımız bir yazlık komşuluğu ile başlamıştı.

Bülent bey ressamdı, ama biz ve çoğu arkadaşımız gibi bir endüstriye bağlı çalışan değil, yağlıboya ve pastel tablolar yapan, sergilere katılan bir ressamdı.

Bülent bey’in eserlerini eşim ve ben seviyorduk çünkü bizim dünyamızdan uzak değildi. Bizi sergi salonlarından kaçıran birçok “çağdaşlarından” farklı olarak görmekten zevk aldığımız, en başta ne gördüğümüzü anladığımız eserler üretiyordu, “resim” yapıyordu yani.

Yurt içi ve yurdışında eserlerini sergilemiş, ABD’de kendisini üyeliğe kabul eden Pastel Society of America tarafından imzalarına PSA harflerini ekleme yetkisi verilmiş. Ben de bu yazının başında ekledim.

Bülent ve Sedef Turan çifti son derece sıcak ve içten oldukları gibi görüş ve zevkler bakımından bize yakın insanlardı. Evlerini bize o kadar yakın bir zevkle döşemişlerdi ki bazen kendimizi kendi mekânımızda gibi hissediverirdik. Muhabbetlerinin verdiği rahatlığın da katkısı olmuştur muhakkak.

Bülent bey’in kaybıyla hayatımızın renklerinden biri daha gitti. Keşke daha sık görüşseydik diyeceğim; yaşadıkça da o kadar çok “keşke” birikiyor ki…!

ENGLISH:

We lost the painter Bülent Turan on April 19th, 2021. (No, not Covid- heart failure!)

Our friendship with the couple Bülent and Sedef Turan goes back to being neighbours in a summer resort.

Mr. Turan was an artist. Unlike us and many of our friends who have applied our art to an industry, Mr. Turan created his oil and pastel paintings with the aim to exhibit.

We appreciated the paintings of Mr. Turan because we found them to be closer to our understanding of Art. Unlike many of his contemporaries who drove us away from the galleries, he made paintings we enjoyed looking at, and a precondition for that was that we understood what we were looking at; he was creating “pictures” pure and simple.

He exhibited at home and abroad with distinction, becoming a member of the Pastel Society of America, from which he has obtained the right to add the letters “PSA” after his name- as I have done at the beginning of this article.

Bülent and Sedef Turan were a couple who projected warmth and sincerity, and their views and tastes largely coincided with ours. Their home was furnished in a taste so close to our own that we sometimes felt we were in our own domain. The relaxed tone of their conversation must have contributed to the effect.

 

With the departure of Mr. Bülent Turan we have irretrievably lost another color in our lives. I am moved to say “if only we had seen them more frequently”; the longer we live, the more life fills up with these “if only”’s!

SÜPER 2ZLER x 4 - SUPERTWINS x 4

TÜRKÇE:

2zler Emre ve Sina 4 yaşını doldurdu- zaman uçuyor! Ve doğum günlerinden beri bir ay geçti bile- zaman daha da hızlı uçuyor!

Uçan sadece zaman değil, süper kahramanlara merak salan 2zler de uçuyorlar. Hatta duyduk ki bütün aile omuzlarından çarşaf sarkıtarak oradan oraya uçuyorlarmış! Doğal olarak bu senenin teması o oldu! Lâle renklere yardım etti tabii!

Süperlâle ve Süpertavşan'ı ilâve etmek sonradan aklıma geldi; figürleri bilgisayarda birleştirdiğim için bu sene bir bigisayar çıktısı vermek durumunda kaldım. (Önceki senelerde verdiklerim de tam orijinal sayılmazdı; kurşun kalemi fotokopileyip onu kuruboyayla renklediriyordum.)

Lâle o kadar havasına girdi ki bir "Süperlâle" kıyafeti yaratarak kendini buldu, bu şekilde birkaç fotoğraf çektik. Arkadaşımız Murat (Çelik) resimleri görünce kendi yaratıcı katkılarıyla Süperlâle'yi uçurdu!

ENGLISH:

The twins Emre and Sina are four years old now- time flies! And it has been more than a month since their birthday- time flies even faster!

And it's not only time that flies; the twins are totally into super heroes so they are flying too! We have even heard that the whole family is flying about with bedsheets dangling from their shoulders! Naturally, thet became the theme of this year's birthday picture! Lâle helped with the colors, of course!

Lâle really entered the spirit of things, conjuring a costume and finding her true self as "Superlâle", and I took a few photos of her like that. The photos inspired our friend Murat (Çelik) to really send Lâle flying!

Pandemi yılı olarak tarihe geçecek bir yıldan sonra yeni yıl resmimizin konusunun ne olacağı belli!

Zaten sene boyunca Covid-19 ve sosyal hayatta getirdiği değişiklikler zihnimi ve kalemimi bol bol meşgul etti.

İlkbahar aylarında ilk tepkim biraz hafife almak oldu; devrimlerle kurtulduğumuz peçeye sağlık gerekçesiyle tekrar sokulmamızın tezatını dile getirdim. (Sağda.)

Medyadan virüsün ne kadar bulaşıcı ve korkunç öldürücü olduğu haberlerini duydukça bir korku sardı tabii ki, ve kalemime aksetti!

Corona, "Rex Mundi MMXX".

Resmi kanallarda ve ana akım medyada söylenenlerde tutarsızlıklar vardı, kulağa rahatsız edici, bir yandan kuşku uyandırıcı söylentiler dolaşıyordu: ABD-Çin rekabeti, biyolojik savaş, dünyaya "reset" yapma lâfları...! Karantinada kapalı kaldığım günlerde duyduklarım, şahit olduklarım ve hissettiklerime göre anladığım kadarını yazıya döktüm. ("Pandemiler Götürsün Yeni Dünyanızı", 12 haziran 2020.) Kafelerin hâlâ açık olduğu son günlerde kahve eşliğinde eskiz defterime yaptığım "Corona Dünya Kralı" resmini o makalenin girişinde kullandım.

Alternatif görüşleri duydukça işin içinde iş olabileğini düşünmeye başladım. Çoluk çocuk içerilere kapatıldığımız 23 Nisan bayramımızı da bir şekilde kutlamamız gerekiyordu! Ulusal egemenliğimizin 100'üncü yıl böyle mi kutlanacaktı?

Facebook, 19 Mayıs 2020.

1918-1922 arasında dünyayı sarsan büyük İspanyol gribi salgını anılmaya başlanınca, bunun tam bizim Kurtuluş Savaşı'yla çakıştığını farkettim. 19 Mayıs bayramımız gelince "evde kal sağlıklı kal" söylemlerinin o gün için ne saçma olacağını düşünmeden edemedim!

Yabancı dil geliştirmek için YouTube'dan vidolar dinlerken rastladığım alterntif görüşleri dinledikçe işkillendim ve meselenin belki de bizim sağlığımızı korumaktan farklı birşey olduğunu düşünmeye başladım. Hele dünyayı "resetlemek", para dahil herşeyi sanal ortama kaydırmak gibi hedefler olduğu söylentileri benim bankalarla olan çatışmamı tırmandırdı. Bankaların insanları ATM ve internet bankacılığına zorlayan uygulamaları pandemiden önce başlamıştı, şimdi ellerindeki yeni kozla bizi biryerlere zorladıkları iyice belli oluyordu! Zaten medyada "bitcon" ve "kripto para" reklamlarıyla sıkça karşılaşır oldum!

Facebook, üst sol, 7 Haziran 2020: bankamatik ya da internet bankacılığı mecburi olunca onlarda da havaleye ücret geldi; üst sağ, Ağustos 2020: "mesai saati dışında" diye bankamatik daha yüksek havale ücreti alıyor; alt sol, 17 Ekim 2020: mecburi temassız kart, başka türlüsü yok; alt sağ 13 Kasım 2020: bir hesabım internet bankacılıkta gözükmüyor, banka defteri istersem de bundan böyle ücretli!

Facebook, 11 Aralık 2020. Internet bankacılığı kullanımında değişiklik ve sadece "onaylıyorum" butonu. Değişikliği onaylamazsanız artık kullanamıyorsunuz!

 

Bu zorlamalar ortamında acele hazırlanmış aşıları yaptırmaya mecbur kalacağımız söylentileri beni hastalıktan daha fazla korkutmaya başladı- hele işin içinde önceden denenmemiş genetik aşılar, hücrelerimizin içine sokulacak RNA zincirleri mevzubahis olunca! "HES kodu" uygulamasıyla zorlamanın altyapısı hazırlandı bile! Belki de ülkemizin tercihini Çin'in gerleneksel yöntemlerle üretilmiş "inaktif virüs" aşısından yana kullanmış olması bir şans! Mecbur tutulmamayı tercih ederim, nihayet Çinliler aşılarını geliştirip denemek için daha fazla vakte sahip değildiler, ama o bana büyük bir farkla daha "ehven-i şer" gözüküyor!

Derken bir haber çıktı ki ne pandemiyle, alâkası vardı, ne aşılarla, ne de herhangi bir şeyle: bundan böyle mahalle-sokak-bina numarası yerine bir "adres kodu sistemi" getirilecekti. Bu da "komlpo teorileri" dediklerinin bir kanıtı mıydı? Bunca yıldır posta koduna alışamayan milletimin pasif direniş içgüdüsüne güvenmekle beraber yine de getirilmek istenen kişiliksiz toplumun bu yeni habercisine karşı ses çıkarma gereği hissettim.

Concluding a year that will go down in history, it is clear what the theme of the new year will be! 

Covid-19 and the changes it has brought to our social life has naturally occupied my mind and guided my pencil.

My first response in those early spring months was to try to see the lighter side: I played on the irony of the virus forcing the veil back after the Reforms had freed us from it! (Right.)

 

After continuously hearing about how contagious and lethal the virus is, I was naturally gripped by fear, and as might be expected, so was my pencil!

There were inconsistencies in what was told by the officialdom and the media, disturbing rumors were circulating, all provoking suspicion: the US vs. China rivalry, biological warfare, the plan to "reset" the world...! When we were all shut in for the quarantine I tried to make sense of it all according to what I heard, witnessed and felt, and put it in writing. (See: "A Pox on your New World", 20 Nisan-April 2020.) In those last days before cafés closed down, I drew a personification of Covid-19 as "the King of the World" in my sketchbook while sipping my coffee and used that drawing for the opening of that article. 

 

The more I heard alternative opinions the more I believed there was more to this than met the eye. We had to celebrate our 23rd of April Children's Holiday in some way. Was this the way to celebrate the 100th year of National Sovereignity?

Facebook, May 19th, 2020, trying to persuade

 

We are often asked to remember the Spanish Flu epidemic that devastated the world in 1918-1922, and it occured to me that it coincided with our own War of Independence. As we approached our May 19th holiday, I couldn't help thinking how ridiculous "stay home, stay healthy" would have sounded back then!

 

While listening to YouTube videos in other languages to keep in practice, I came across alternative viewpoints, and the more I listened, the more I felt uncomfortable with the generally accepted viewpoints, and started to suspect that maybe it wasn't about our health after all! Hearing talk about "reseting" the world, shifting everything including cash to a digital milieu made me intensify my already existing conflict with the banks.The push away from face-to-face transactions towards cash points and online banking had started before we ever heard of this virus; now with the pandemic as a convenient excuse, it is really becoming obvious that there is some objective they are trying to reach. Meanwhile, I hear and see ads for "bitcoins" and "crypto-money" on the media with increasing frequency!

Facebook, December 11th 2020: Bank introduces change in how you make online banking transactions with only an "I agree" button; if you don't click that, you can't use it anymore!

 

In the prevailing atmosphere of changes being forced upon us, I found rumors of a forced vaccine all the more disquieting- especially considering the new, untried genetic vaccines that propose to pump RNA strands directly into our cells! With the "HES code" already in effect (a coded tracking system in use in Turkey, without which we are barred access to many places, like shopping centers, tax bureaus, post offices etc.), they have already put in place mechanism by which a vaccine can be forced on us. It may be a very good thing that our country has opted for the Chinese "Inactive Virus" vaccine, prepared in the traditional way. I wouldn't want to have a vaccine forced upon me; the Chinese vaccine has had as little time for development and testing as the others, but if I am left with no other choice, I would see that as the lesser evil by a large margin!

Smack in the middle of this depressing atmosphere there was a news item about an innovation that had nothing to do with the pandemic, the vaccine, or anything else: the traditional neighbourhood-street-housenumber system of postal addresses are to be replaced by codes, a string of numbers that would inicate where we live. Could this be something to support the opinions expressed by the so-called "conspiracy theorists"? I have faith in our nation's instinct for passive resistance; after all, we never took to postal codes. Still, I found it necessary to call attention to this new step towards an impersonalized society.

 

Facebook, December 14th 2020: "Now you are changing our addresses to numbers. Just tattoo a number on our arm and be done with it!" "No need; we have nano-chips for that"!

Our wish for Mankind, stuck between the virus and the vaccine, is health and liberty in the new year.

2ZLER 3LEDİ- THE TWINS ARE THREE

İkizler üç yaşında! Artık alt katta oturmuyorlar, anne ve babalarının tayiniyle ailece toparlanıp İzmit'e gittiler. Alt kat boşalınca biz de bütün evi bir müzik okuluna kiraya verip Kırklareli'ne taşıdık. Doğduğum evi,  evliliğimiz boyunca nereye gidersek gidelim dönüp geldiğimiz yuvamız olmuş olan evi terketmek tahmin edemiyeceğim kadar zor geldi. Tahmin edemediğim başka birşey de, anneme de zor geleceğiydi. 

Küçükler bugün de pek kolay değiller, çok güzel olan yeni evleri daima dağınık ve bir hır gür içinde, ama oraya gitmek, "kızım" Zeynep ve azgın "torunlarım" Emre ve Sina ile birlikte gürültülü, bol patırtılı birkaç gün geçirmek sabırsızlıkla beklediğim bir tecrübe.

Geçen hafta (20 Şubat) doğum günleriydi, doğduklarından beri süregelen geleneği devam ettirdim ve yine bir doğum günü resmi yaptım. (Aynı zamanda bkz.: "Bir Yıldır Dede", 25 Şubat 2018 ve "2x2", 25 Şubat 2019.) Annemi emanet edecek birisini bulamadığım için ancak bir gün geç gidebildim. Lâle zaten oradaydı.Eski günlerdeki gibi biraradaydık yine!

ENGLISH:

The twins are now three years old! They no longer live downstairs from us. With the transfer of their mother and father the whole family packed up and moved to İzmit. With the downstairs apartment vacant we rented the whole house to a music school and moved out as well, taking everything to Kırklareli. I hadn't foreseen how hard it would be for me to leave the house to which I was born, the place that was our home base throughout our married life, no matter where we lived. Nor could I foresee how hard my mother would take it. 

The little guys are still a handful, and their beautiful new home is always a pandemonium, but I always look forward to being with my "daughter" Zeynep and spending a few noisy days with my "grandsons".

Their birthday was last week (February 20th). I followed up a custom that I initiated when they were born and marked the occasion with a drawing. (See also: "Grandpa for a Whole Year", 25 Şubat-December 2018 and "2x2", 25 Şubat-February 2019). Because I couldn't find anyone to stay with my mother, I could only get there on the following day. Lâle was already there. We were all together again, just like in those good old days!

YENİYIL-2020-NEWYEAR

İttire kaktıra 2019'un sonuna geldik, "bu sene yapamayacağım" derken yine de yapabildim bir yeni yıl resmi. Son senelerde güncel temalara değinmem beklenir oldu, oysa ben de güncel temalardan giderek kopuyorum! "Ne yapsam ne yapsam" diye düşünürken Marmaray'da akıllı telefonuna gömülmüş bir vatandaş gördüm, horoz döğüşü seyrediyordu. Aklıma ilk gelen ülkemizi çok ilgilendiren vesayet savaşları oldu- başta Suriye'deki, ama Ortradoğu onlarla dolu. Ayrıca Türkiye içinde de sağ-sol'dan tutun Türk-Kürt, Türk-Ermeni, dinci-lâik, Alevi-Sünni, CHP-AKP, kendileri konuya taraf olmayan menfaat çevrelerinin kaşıdığı birçok çatışma var. Hatta siyasilerin seçmen kitlelerini çelmek için mahalle kavgası ağzıyla atışmalarını bile buna katabiliriz- üç kuruşluk siyasi prim için milleti birbirine düşürecek son derece tehlikeli bir oyun!

Yeni yılda kışkırtmalar son bulsun diyeceğim, bulmaz. İnsanlar o kadar kolay dolduruşa gelmesinler, o yeter!

Seasonal message for newyear 2020. Lâle was away, so I avoided putting much color.

ENGLISH:

It's after a particularly hard drag that we found ourselves at the end of this year. I had all but given up on coming up with a new seasonal message. One problem was that people have come to expect something topical from me, about what's going on in our country and the region, but I am sinking into a kind of apathy in that regard. Then one day I saw a man in a suburban train carriage, watching something on his cell phone... a cockfight, of all things! That immediately reminded me of the proxy war in Syria, which has such a great effect on us. But beyond that, the whole of the Middle East is an arena for proxy wars. What's more, even within the borders of our country we have been experiencing conflicts provoked by centers of interests that have no direct connection to the issues- from left vs. right through Turkish vs. Kurdish, Turkish vs. Armenian, to fundamentalist vs. secular, Alevi vs. Sunni, CHP vs. AKP etc.. Nor should we forget the bickering of the political leaders who do not hesitate to provoke the citizens against each other, a dangerous game played for petty political gains.

I would say "put an end to provokation in the new year", but that would be unrealistic. It would be enough if people would just stop being provoked so easily.

ÇİZGİ FİLM BAYRAMI- 2019- HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY

18 Kasım, Çizgi Film bayramı için seçtiğimiz gün. 3 boyutlu bilgisayar canlandırmasının yaygınlaşıp o güne kadar hakim olan el çiziminin silinmeye, düne kadar el üstünde tutulan usta animatörlerin kapıya konduğu günlerde önermiştik temelinde "çizgi" olan "çizgi filmi" ve bir asrı geçen birikimini onurlandırmak için. Bayram gününün 18 Kasım olmasını ben önermiştim, Miki Fare'nin ilk defa seyirciyle buluştuğu gün anısına (Steamboat Willie, 18 Kasım 1928). Bir ara önerimiz kabul görecek gibi oldu, ama sonra silindi gitti. (Bkz. "Çizgi Film Bayramı", 18 Kasım 2015.) Arkadaş çevremizde kutladığımız oldu (bkz."Çizgi Film Bayramı 2016", 22 Kasım 2016), ama o da herzaman olamadı.

Bu sene tek başıma da olsa kutlayacağım dedim, Lâle burada değil, yoksa birşeyler organize ederdi herhâlde. İlk iş Facebook'ta paylaşmak üzere bir resim hazırladım; Steamboat Willie'den bir karede fareyi silip yerine tavşanı, yani kendimi koyarak.

(Aslında filmden kare çok doğru değil, koleksyoncular için üretilmiş asetat ve fon; filmden gerçek bir kare almak daha düşük bir görüntü kalitesi demek olurdu.) 1928'in çizgi film dekorunun temsil ettiği nostaljik bir dünya içinde  tek başıma yoluma devam ediyor olma duygusu hoşuma gitti doğrusu- hatta gidişin okuma yönünün tersi sağdan sola olması bile duyguyu güçlendirdi benim için- geriye, eskiye doğru. Beni bu yaşımda tekrar tekrar Oyuncak Müzesi'ne çeken duyguya yakın aslında.

versyonundan daha güzel ve canlı olmuş aslında. Miki'ni ikonik pozuna daha yakın olsun diye uğraşırken biraz donuklaştırmışım- ama iyi tepki aldı: şu an itbarıyla 45 beğeni ve 8 paylaşımım va ki benim için yüksek. Beni en çok duygulandıran cevap Türk canlandırma dünyasında iz bırakan, popüler kültürümüze Fenerbahçe'nin Kanarya Ailesi'ni, Yapı Kredi'nin "Vadalarını", Turkcell'in kedisini,  kazandıran Ozan Kaygısız'dan geldi. Nihayet canlandırma kariyerine Manajans/Thompson'da bana yardımcı olarak başlamıştı. Facebook'da bayram mesajıma verdiği cevap şöyleydi:

"Sanırım animasyon hayatınıza en uzun şahit olma şansına erişenlerden biriyim.. Bu ülkede böyle bir bayramı gerçekleştirmenizden dolayı en içten dileklerinle kutluyorum... 80 sonlarında yaptığı işlerin pencil testlerini İngiltere’ye gönderip sonucunu 2 ay bekleyen Böyle bir Hocanın değerini hepiniz bilin istedim.. O kimseler yokken bu bayramı hep yaşattı. Şimdi sadece adını gününü koymuş.. sizi tanımak hayatımdaki en güzel şeylerden biriydi.. Çizgi film bayramımız kutlu olsun." (Aslında İngiltere değil İrlanda, oraya gidişim 1987).

Sağol Ozan!

Bayram kutlamam tam olsun diye yeni gösterime giren Klaus'u o gün görmeye karar verdim. Klaus çizerek yapılmış bir film, kâğıtla değil tabletle ama yine de çizerek, onun için bu "Çizgi" Film Bayramı için en doğal seçim. Üstad animatör Sergio Pablos Disney'den ayrılıp ülkesi İspanya'da bir uzun metraj çizgi film- el çizimi bir film- yapmayı amaçlamıştı, Klaus ile bunu nihayet başardı. Kendinden beklenen kaliteli canlandırmadan ödün vermemiş, ayrıca gölge ve ışık katmanlarıyla çizimlere çarpıcı bir şekilde boyut kazandırarak 3 buyutlu bilgisayar grafiğiyle de rekabete girmişti.

Benim için bir diğer önemi, filmde çalışmak için davet almış olmam- Sergio Pablos'un kendinden. 90 üstü annemi uzun vadeli bırakıp İspanya'ya taşınamayacağımdan kabul edemedim, ama genç arkadaşım yetenekli animatör Tuğrul Tiryaki başardı- ben de teşvik ettim doğrusu. Onun da katkısının olması beni ayrıca gururlandırıyor.

Film Netflix yapımı, ve sadece abonelerin ulaşabildiği bu internet kanalı dışında filmi görme şansı yok. Belki DVD'si çıkar desek onlar da piyasadan kalktı, en azından bu ülkede! Onun için bazı Facebook arkadaşlarımın önerisine uyarak 30 günlük deneme süresiyle abone oldum ve bayramda seyrettim. Başı ukalaca ve duygusuz gelmekle birlikte bir noktadan sonra üç ayrı yerinde ağlatarak iyi canlandırma film için en önde gelen kriterlerimen birini yerine getirdi.

miktar seyrettim. Onda da bir diğer yetenekli genç arkadaşım Yağızhan Mısırlı çalışmıştı, hem de evden beri. Bu seneki "Çizgi Film Bayramım" bir parti havasında geçmediyse de benim için mutluluk verici, tatmin edici bir gün oldu.




Bu arada hem Tuğrul, hem Yağızhan halihazırdaki özel film çalışmama yardım ettiler, hele Yağızhan'ın çok emeği geçti, ve hâla geçiyor.



ENGLISH:

November 18th, the day we chose for Hand-Drawn Animation Day! We proposed such a commemorative day in the years when CG was invading the animation world, threatening to reduce hand-drawn animation, the most established technique, to obsolescence. Animators so recently elevated to the status of heroes were suddenly finding themselves unemployed. We thought it necessary to honor the century-long heritage of the hand-drawn animated film, and I was the one to propose November 18th, anniversary of the day Mickey Mouse first met his audience (Steamboat Willie was released on November 18th 1928). For a while, it seemed the idea would click, but it didn't last. (See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day" 18 Kasım-November 2015.) We celebrated among friends when we could (see: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day 2016", 22 Kasım-November 2016) but we couldn't do it consistently.

This year I said I would celebrate alone if I have to. Lâle isn't here, otherwise she probably would have motivated our friends. I started out by making a commemorative image for Facebook: I took a frame from Steamboat Willie (admittedly a cel setup for collectors rather than a real image from the film-

better resolution), erased the mouse and replaced him with the rabbit- Yours Truly of course! The feeling of continuing my way alone in a nostalgic world represented by the 1928 cartoon background appealed to me. The motion of the boat to the left, opposite to the direction of writing, also seemed fitting: backwards, into the past. At my age, a similar sentiment draws me to the toy museum again and again.

In retrospect, the first sketch I made in the bookshop cafe (Penguen on Bağdat Cad.) looks better and livelier to me than the final one I did on tablet. It seems something

got lost while attempting to reproduce Mickey's iconic pose- but I had good response: 45 likes and 8 shares, a high score for me. The most touching comment was by Ozan Kaygısız, a friend who started his career in animation while helping me back in my days at the ad agency (Manajans/Thompson) and moved on to enrich our popular culture with Fenerbahçe's canary family, Yapı Kredi's "Vadas", and Turkcell's cat. The following is his comment in response to my Hand-Drawn Animation Day message:

"I think I am one of the very few who have had the good fortune to follow your career for the longest time... I sincerely felicitate you for realizing such a celebration in this country. I wanted all of you to appreciate the value of such a teacher who, in the late 80's, sent his work to England and waited 2 months for a reply. He kept this celebration alive when there was no one else. Now he just gave it a name and a date... Meeting you has been one of the most wonderful things in my life. Happy hand-drawn animation day." (Actually, it wasn't England but Ireland, where I went in 1987.)

To make my celebration complete, I decided to watch the newly released Klaus on that day. Klaus is a hand-drawn film, albeit on tablet rather than paper. After leaving Disney, master animator Sergio Pablos returned to his native Spain where he hoped to create a hand-drawn feature. With Klaus, he finally made this a reality. He never compromised on the quality that we have come to expect from him, and plussed his animation with layers of effects that give dimension to the characters to rival the full roundedness of CG.

Another thing that makes this film special for me is that I was actually invited to work on it- by Sergio Pablos personally! My mother is over 90, and it was unthinkable that I leave her for such a long stretch of time, but my young friend and gifted animator Tuğrul Tiryaki made it- and I did encourage him to try! It excites me to know he too has contributed.

The film was produced by Netflix, a members-only Internet channel, so it won't be shown in theatres. Hoping for a DVD is pointless since they have all vanished from the shelves, at least in this country! So I followed the advice of some Facebook friends and went for 30 day free trial subscription and watched the film. The early sequences seemed smart-alecky and cold but after a point it made me cry, in three distinct sequences, therefore fulfilling my most important criterion for a good animated film.

I topped off the feast with some Green Eggs and Ham- I already had access to Netflix so why not? The series is also

Green Eggs and Ham.

hand drawn and has all the vivacity we associate with the genre. Another talented friend, Yağızhan Mısırlı, has worked on it from home. This year's Hand Drawn Animation Day wasn't a festive party, but was a pleasantly satisfying day for me nevertheless.

As it happens both Tuğrul and Yağızhan have given me a hand with my present personal film, especially Yağızhan who is still putting in much effort.

Kadıköy'ün boğasını oldum olası Kadıköy'e yakıştırırım. Kadıköy özgür nefes alabildiğimi hissettiğim bir yerdir ve bana göre Kadıköy'lünün baskıya baş eğmezliğinin en güzel sembolü, bu boğamızdır.

Fransız heykeltraş Isidore Bonheur'ün bu heykeli Türkiye'ye nasıl geldi? Bir deyişe göre 1917'de İstanbul'u ziyaret eden Kaiser Wilhelm II'nin hediyesidir. Fransız'ın heykelinin Almanların elinde olması da 1871'de Almanların Fransayı ezip geçtiği savaşa dayandırılıyor. Diğer bir deyiş ise Sultan Abdülaziz'in 1867'de yaptığı büyük (ve bir Osmanlı sultanı için ilk) yurtdışı gezisinden sonra Fransa'dan getirttiği hayvan heykellerinden biri olduğu yönündedir. (Boğamızla takım olan bir de diklenen boğa heykeli vardır ki hâlen Beylerbeyi sarayının bahçesindedir.) Gerçek ne olursa olsun, boğamız artık Kadıköylüdür, bizdendir!

Vatan Partisi Kadıköy İlçe Başkanlığı benden yeni internet kanalları Boğa TV için "sevimli bir boğa" tasarımı isteyince hevesle koyuldum işe. İlk teşebbüslerim Lâle'nin eleştirilerinden sonra çöpe gitti, neyse ki ona beğendirebildiğim tasarımı Vatan Partisi'ndekiler de beğendi. Kuruboya kullanarak iki adet renkli yaptık -renkleri Lâle seçti. Önce beğenildi, ama sonra dijital ren yaptklendirme istediler. Onu da yapınca beğendilerse de gömlek ve pantolon renklerini değiş tokuş ederek denememi istediler. Onu da yaptım ama görünce bir önceki hâline döndürdüler. 

Neticede beğenildi! Boğa TV şimdi internette. Gömlek ve pantolon renkleri bambaşka, pozunda da değişiklik var (bkz. en alttaki resim)- ama memnunlar ki kullandılar, önemli olan da bu!

ENGLISH:

I always found Kadıköy's bull very apt for that quarter of Istanbul. Kadıköy is a place where I feel I breathe freer, and I feel our bull is a good metaphor for the neighbourhood's irrepressible spirit.

How did a bull sculpted by French sculptor Isodore Bonheur end up all the way here in Turkey? Some sources say it was a gift of Kaiser Wilhelm II, brought over during his state visit here in 1917. The Germans, in turn, are supposed to have got it when they defeated France in the Franco-Prussian war in 1871. Others link it to the state visit of Sultan Abdulaziz to France in 1867 (the first such visit abroad by any Turkish sultan), after which he imported a number of such sculpted animals. (Indeed, Kadıköy's bull has a pendant, with head up, in the garden of the Beylerbey palace on the Bosphorus.) Whatever the truth, the bull is a resident of Kadıköy, and is one of us.

August 5th 2013, the day the verdicts of the infamous Ergenekon trials were to be passed out. Protesters are approaching Kadıköy's bull. A lot will happen before that day is done.

When the district office of the Vatan Party called to ask for an appealing bull character for their new Internet video channel, I applied myself with enthusiasm. My first attempts fell victim to Lâle's sharp criticism, fortunately the design she eventually liked was received very favourably by the Party as well. We rendered two poses in color with colored pencils- Lâle selected the colors. The Party people liked them at first, but then asked for digital coloring. When I did that, they liked them again, but asked me to try a version with the colors of the shirt and trowsers switched. When I did that they decided to go back to the earlier one.

So they were satisfied and now the bull is on the internet. They've changed the colors of the shirt and trowsers completely, and even the pose (see bottom image, above) Well, they're happy with it that's the main thing!
