LÂLE'NİN SAKLI BAHÇESİ- LÂLE'S SECRET GARDEN

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Lâle her zaman bahçe, bahçe içinde müstakil ev sevmiştir.

ENGLISH

We all have dreams. Some dreams are idle fantasies, always pushed away to the safe distance of an undefined future, never to be realized. Some are passions that won’t let go until they are realized, and it is amazing how much beating we are able to take for them, how we pick ourselves up and try again after each stumble and fall.

For once, I am not talking about animation, but about the amazing willpower and energy spent by someone very close to me to turn an abandoned plot of land with some derelict buldings into a small paradise. How amazing that I am married to her!

Lâle always liked gardens, and private one-family homes in them. We used to enjoy strolling through such neighbourhoods in different towns throughout our years abroad in animation. I knew she fancied herself the owner of such a place, and I kept saying “one day”, pushing it away to the safe distance of an undefined future. But she was not to be placated with an idle fantasy; she really wanted to own and live in such a place. Not simply to buy it, as it turned out, but to create it out of near nothing.

When she purchased the plot of land with the derelict house and hayloft that had been her mothers birthplace in a village near Kırklareli, the idea of making anything out of it seemed too far-fetched to be practicable. The energy she has spent, the problems she has overcome, her unwillingness to give up have been amazing as well as inspiring. Now her garden is like a little country of its own, standing apart from its surroundings not only because of its perimeter wall, but because of its look; lush, well-kept, and emanating an atmosphere of peace.

MODEL VATANDAŞ-TOLGA ZIPKINKURT- A MODEL CITIZEN

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

He just felt like it, so he gave this to me: a Republican tank captured by Franco's insurgents. Besides, he "needed the space".

Also from the shelves behind the counter- Germans loading a railroad carriage.

ENGLISH

We understand professionalism as excellence in execution of whatever task. The Word comes from “profession”, in other words, a job, something one does for money, so “professionalism” is really doing your job well. But there are also masters of their craft who create at least some of their work as “amateurs”, and I have an even greater respect for them, as well as feel closer in spirit- because they are willing to employ their expertise, labor and time for something other than money, their only motivation being simply loving what they do!

Tolga Zıpkınkurt is an alumnus of the Animation Department of the Anadolu University in Eskişehir, but never did any animation after school. He moved directly to modelmaking. Even though his student days never coincided with my time as a guest instructor at the University, he politely addresses me as “teacher” (for which I am thankful). He runs a petshop in a backstreet of Istanbul and the models he builds in the meantime he piles up on shelves behind the counter. If he likes you, he’ll give you one (“lack of space”). He insisted I accept the model of a “Republican tank captured by Franco’s insurgents during the Spanish civil war”.

Tolga is not just a master amateur; you can admire his professional work at Miniatürk Istanbul and Mini City Antalya. But what really impresses me is that he keeps producing for no other reason than the urge to create something excellent, only to give it away. This, to me, is being an artist: having the unstoppable compulsuion to continue executing ones art.

BERBAT KEDİ ŞERAFETTİN- THE ROTTEN CAT

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

For years we keep hearing that "the first Turkish animated feature film has been produced", all soon forgotten because, though they fulfilled the requirement in screen time, they were technically never up to par.

Now we have a really lavish and well made production before us, with quality animation (I would have preferred more elasticity in the mouth action), fast tempo, efficient storytelling and strong visuals. To top it all, it all feels authentic, all indigenously Turkish, from the dialogue full of colloquialisms and slang to the authentic locales, all familar sights of Istanbul like Taksim square, the steep Cihangir neighbourhood, the Bosphorus, the Galata tower, and the generic corner grocer.

Unfortunately, the protagonist is a selfish, fowlmouthed, agressive bully and potential rapist named Şerafettin ("Shero"). He breaks into a flat to molest a housecat, who gets electrocuted and killed when she tries to escape. In an ensuing scuffle, Shero flings her distressed owner out of a window to his death, his brain landing beside him. The poor man returns as a zombie to seeks revenge, becoming the villain of the film, with Shero as the unlikely hero. I cannot condone a film that lionizes the agressor and villainizes the victim. Just a few days ago I and my wife were in a protest march against the victimization of women- a very real problem here. What kind of a message would this film broadcast to the sick minds out there?

They are carrying photographs of Hilal Aslan, shot by her brother on June 20th 2014 for wanting to stay with her boyfriend, Cansel Buse Kınalı, who shot herself on February 24th 2016 after reportedly being abused by her teacher, and Özgecan Aslan, murdered by a minibus driver in course of an attempted rape on February 11th 2015.
There were many other photos carried that day.

I watched the film with mixed feelings; I was simultaneously swept and repelled by it, I laughed even as my stomach turned. Watching a good animated film leaves me a warm afterglow, a state of happiness and purification. This film dragged me down, left me feeling sullied. I paid attention to the mood of the public leaving the theatre, both of our screening and the one preceding it; no smiling faces- and this, after a comedy..!

For years director Mehmet Kurtuluş has had a sustained ambition to create an animatied feature that would be up to international standards. In the end he achieved his goal. I wholeheartedly congratulate him and the Anima team on this. It is
unfortunate that he opted for the "cult" comic strip of cartoonist Bülent Üstün.

It is probable that the intention was to cash in on the popularity of the strip, but on the other hand a film inaccessible to children below 13 and requiring parental guidance up to 15 already sacrifices a large slice of the audience potential. (I hear families who inadvertently brought their children to see the film to see the kitty were shocked.) As for the fans of the film, they would prefer to find ways to see the film for free.

Now that they have proven that they are capable of creating a fine animated feature, I expect Mehmet Kurtuluş and the Anima team to tell us a worthwhile story.
