OLAMADI İŞTE- IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

A sketcbook page where I pour my positive feelings for Switzerland.

Titeuf tatilde İstanbul'a gelecek! Neden olmasın,
ben de onun memleketine gitmiyor muyum? (Ses benim sesim.)
Titeuf will spending his holidays in Istanbul!
Why not, I enjoy spending mine in his country, don't I? (The voice is mine.)

Titeuf sahnelerimin hepsi değilse de çoğu. Baştan onaylansalar da hiçbiri kullanılmadı.
Most, but not all of my Titeuf scenes. Though initially approved, none were used.

 ENGLISH

An e-mail that arrived in my mailbox on June 29th, 2009 had such an unbelievable phrase written in the "subject" field that I thought it was a prank.

It said "Animaton job in Switzerland" (Animationsjob in der Schweiz). It had to be a prank by someone who knew of the attraction that country exercises on me.

I was already eligible to retire. How wonderful it would be to close my career in a country I have liked so much since childhood. An in Lucerne (Luzern in German), a lakeside town of fairytale architecture, with snow covered mountains lined along the horizon.

I had met Jonas Raeber, owner of SWAMP studio, in course of the 1995 Annecy Animation Festival. It was an interesting mutual introduction; our films were screened back to back on the same nigreht. Herr Raeber had his Grüezi, Lâle and I our Kebabaluba, two films incredibly similar in approach and complementary in theme. Both had a single character talking directly to the audience, both involved national self-criticism, the Swiss film had Swiss bigotry for a theme and our film the unpolished Turkish immigrant who inspires that bigotry. The selection committee had obviously seen it fit to pair them together.

There was now a project to bring the comic book character Titeuf to the big screen. Created by the Swiss comic artist Zep, it would benefit from some Swiss state support- provided a certain percentage of the investment be spent inside Switzerland. This raised Herrn Raeber's hopes that his SWAMP would get the Swiss share of the production, for you see though SWAMP is an acronym for "Switzerland's Weeniest Animated Motion Pictures", it is still the most established operation there. Hoping my status as an ex-Disney animator would persuade investors and authorities he invited me and Lâle to join the production. A large part of the production was to be handled by Neomis in Paris, which used to be Disney Paris, the placewhere I hade spent the most fulfilling part of my
career. It seemed we were on thethreshold of a wonderful adventure. We even managed to make two short business trips while still teaching at Maltepe University without missing a class, one to Geneva and Paris, the other to Lucerne.

I took this photo of Lâle in Lucerne,
during our lightning business trip
in December 2009.

But it was not to be. MoonScoop, the French company handling and overseeing the project, managed to keep SWAMP outside the production, apparently dispensing the required percentage in Switzerland for less production oriented services. That was the end of a wonderful dream!

Speared in the back by the French: this monument in Lucerne commemorates the estimated 760 soldiers of the Swiss Guard who died defending the French King against his own subjects during the attack on the Tuileries, August 10th 1792. Sculpted 1820-21 by Lukas Ahorn to the design by Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Then Bruno Gaumetou of Neomis proposed that I work directly for them, from home if I would. I knew M Gaumetou from my time at Disney, was fond of him and respected him. I was touched that he displayed the confidence to make me the offer.

I threw myself to the project with enthusiasm, even animated a short scene where Titeuf says he'll be vacationing in Istanbul, just to warm up the atmosphere.

But things did not run smoothly. The brief said the animation of film was not to be static like in the TV series, and The Goofy Movie and Lilo & Stitch were given as styles to emulate, but whatever I did had to be toned down. I was not even allowed to use mouth positions that were given on the model sheets. Sample animation arrived in files that were too large for my computer to handle.

Eventually I started to get approvals. Then out of the blue I got a letter from M. Gaumetou, expressing his disappointment in me. He had been told my scenes were all unusable. I mailed him all the correspondence that had taken place between myself and the studio, including the mails that gave approvals to the scenes.

M. Gaumetou responded with a grand gesture- he financially compensated me for the time and effort spent, even though a large part of the animation was still rough and none would be used. He acted like the gentleman I have known him to be and I would like the whole animation community to know it.

Some time later I got another mail from M. Gaumetou, a "farewell" letter so to speak. MoonScope had defaulted on its payments to Neomis, forcing it to bankruptcy. The studio, the last remains of Disney Paris, had closed shop and M. Gaumetou was thanking all friends and collaborators.

That mail arrived on Jan. 26th, 2014. I never heard from him again.
