PEGASUS'U TANIMAK-GETTIN' TO KNOW PEGASUS

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

İncelemem için filme kaydedilmiş at hareketleri tedarik edildi.

(Hades’in canlandırması benimdeğil, büyük ihtimâlle Bolhem Bouchiba.)

Left: Animators are given sculptures of their assigned characters as reference. This is the Pegasus sculpture that fell to me.
Yukarıda Pegasus için etüdlerim. Üstteki iki tanesi verilen heykelden. Alt solda sanat şehri Paris'te III. Alexandre köprüsünün iki başındaki dört heykelden biri. Alt sağda ise bir espri.

Above are some of my studies for Pegasus. The top two are drawings of the sculpted model. Bottom left: inspiration from the city of Art, one of the four sculpture groups at the ends of the Alexandre III bridge in Paris. Bottom right: a joke.

Wish upon a star, believe, and your dreams will come true: a very Disney life philosophy. And my own wish, as an animator, had been to work for Disney. That came true in June 1996, and not inboring Los Angeles but in Paris, city of art! So I can say the Disney philosphy did not disappoint me.

But once in, saw the work was just starting. I was assigned to the Pegasus crew, but before I was allowed to animate the character, I had to get to know him. I had to study the modelsheets and draw him in various poses and expressions. I had to study horse movements recorded on film.

By procedure, each animator is given a beautifullly sculpted model of their character and I drew mine from different angles. I even made some experimental animation to study, among other things, how make the wings plausibly lift the horse.

Then the real work started. The first few scenes I animated for the film encountered some turbulence but thanks to the able and supportive supervision of Ellen Woodbury, it was smooth flying the rest of the way.

Months later, towards the end of production in early 1997, I was given a pair of hookup scenes of Pegasus blowing the flame off Hades’s head, and then laughing at the result. I particularly enjoyed animating the laugh because I put in  my own joy and satisfaction in having become a Disney animator, successfuly bringing my first feature work to a close. That was really me laughing there! I even kept the original roughs; still have them! The animation of Hades, by the way, is almost certainly by Bolhem Bouchiba.

NİCE YILLARA, OKUL ARKADAŞIM- HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SCHOOLMATE

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

We spend the summer months at my wife Lâle's village home and garden (See: "Lâle and her 'Chalet'", 7 September-Ekim 2011). We can't get away much because the garden has to be watered throughout the hot and arid summer months. I spend most of my time there in my room, concentrating on my animation.

One day I got a surprise telephone call; it seems the birthday of one of my classmates way back in high school was approdaching; a montage was in production for the event and I was asked to contribute a videoclip.

I figured a clip coming from me would not be complete if I did not include two or three seconds of animation so I improvised something. I animated lip-synch to my own voice and animated directly in a style somewhere between rough and tiedown. The first day was for the rabbit, the second for the ears!

Accustomed to the meticulous practices of studio animation, I have trouble getting anything done. Maybe there is something in this new approach for a retired animator in his future private animation endeavours.

DİKKAT, ISIRIRLAR!- WATCH OUT, THEY BITE!

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Biss-Kid'lerle- with the Biss Kids.

(Harrrt!)

ENGLISH

I had a difficult stint on The Thief and the Cobbler in London in 1990-91 where , on the first year of my marriage, I had to leave my wife at home while I worked overtime in the studio, only to return with an aching back- much like the character I was animating. (See: "The Thief and the Cobbler", 18 September-Eylül 2012, and "The Crawling Messenger", 21 December-Aralık 2012) In 1991 we moved to Berlin and were both working for Hahn Film. I was asked to design some characters for a television program called Biss Kids where children are supposed to make adults in responsible positions sweat with some "biting" criticism- the type our journalist here can't do face to face, but only behind backs, from a distance.

After the difficult and tight animation in London, these characters were refreshingly loose and lively, a little anarchic as befits their role, and free. I remember truly enjoying animating them. Then someone decided to give them costumes. This slowed down the animation, clean-up and coloring, doing away with all possibility of spontaneous production so essential for the concept of the program.

The animations you see here are mine; further animation was produced by others.

Seeing the behavior of adults these days with chameleon-like switches of opinion I remembered those "bite kids". There are so many adults out there that could do with a good hard bite! (Chomp!)

ANLAMASAK DA ÇİZERİZ!- WE DON'T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IT TO DRAW IT!

TÜRKÇE

Adettendir, animatörler konuşmalı bir sahneyi yaparken ses kaydını tekrar tekrar dinlerler- insanı çıldırtasıya tekrar eden cümlecikler stüdyo hayatının ayrılmaz parçasıdır.

"Herkül" filminde çalıştığım günlerde (1996) bitişik masada çalışan meslekdaşım (Marc Eoche Duval) Hades'in yardakçıları Pain ve Panic'i canlandırmaktaydı.

("a god"!)

ENGLISH

It goes with the job: animators have to listen to voice tracks over and over again when they are working on a dialogue scene. Bits of phrases repeated ad nauseum are an essential ingredient of studio life.

Back when I was working on Hercules (1996), I heard an odd sound coming from the neighbouring desk where a colleague (Marc Eoche Duval) was animating Pain and Panic, the demonic henchmen of the villianous Hades. Though repeated endlessley, I could not make it out, hearing it out of context like that. It did feed my imagination though, and I animated the image it conjured. (That's one of the most delicious aspects of the profession; being able to bring life to any fantasy.)

What was the actual line? Amazed that Hercules has returned alive from the river of souls, Hades expresses his surprise, saying he couldn't do that unless he is...

...here Pain and Panic complete the sentence for him: "...a god!"
