BRUNO GAUMETOU

TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.

Today I received a sad e-mail; Bruno Gaumetou, who once headed Walt Disney Feature Animation, Paris, has left us on October 12th, 2018.

Years later, in 2009, I almost had a chance to work with him again; he was managing Neomis Animation, the struggling remnant of the Walt Disney Feature Animation Paris, and I was to animate scenes for the Titeuf feature from home. My scenes were all turned down, en masse, after most had been first approved. To say I was disappointed is a mild way of putting it. M. Gaumetou had the noble spirit to reimburse me for my efforts, even though none of my animation was used. The production firm, MoonSoop, was apparently less chivalrous in dealing with him and Neomis; On January 26th 2014 M. Gaumetou sent out a resentful e-mail to present and former collaborators detailing how MoonScoop failed to pay Neomis for the studio’s efforts on Titeuf, and how Neomis had to close it’s doors because of that. (For more on that story, see:  "It Could Have Happened", 28 Ağustos- August 2015.)

M. Gaumetou had once had a close brush with the grim reaper as a young man of 23. It was cancer, which he managed to overcome. He emerged from the ordeal with a new outlook on life, which he shared with the general public in his book “This Life, Which Death Gave Me” (Cette Vie que la Mort m’a Donnée).

He left the field of animation for other ventures, which meant I could no longer hope to run into him at the Annecy Festival. Now, with this sad news which hit me far more than I would have thought, there is no longer a chance of running into him anywhere.

Comment vas-tu Tahsin?

Ce matin, plutôt mal, Monsieur Gaumetou. (Rather bad this morning, M. Gaumetou.)

It Could Have Happened", 28 Ağustos- Août 2015.)

BİR OTOPORTRENİN ANATOMİSİ- ANATOMY OF A SELF-PORTRAIT

TÜRKÇE: (For English, please scroll down.)

Mel Ferrer'in kuklalarıyla sohbette.

Bir noktada Larry Gonick!in "Evrenin Çizgi Tarihi" (Cartoon History of the Universe) kitaplarına merak sardım.

Disneyland'in kadrolu ressamı

ENGLISH:

Newyear 1991; our first as a married couple.
Lâle and I were married in 1990, when the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit was still very topical. Lâle called me a rabbit because "I made her laugh", borrowing Jessica's line from the film. I started drawing myself as a bunny, but only as an inside joke.

I think it was the 1953 film Lili that gave me the idea of hiding behind a character- speaking through that character, concealing your real face. In it Mel Ferrer is a withdrawn, unsociable puppeteer who
Leslie Caron chatting with Mel Ferrer's puppets

expresses his feelings for Lili (Leslie Caron) through his puppets. Taking the hint, I have spoken through several characters, mostly through Biki, a mouse character who served as my spokesman when I was teaching animation. (I came up with him at Bilkent University, hence the name: B-K= Biki.)

But Biki wasn't me; he was multi-talented, perennially young,
more cheerful than not, an aviator and an animator, bridging my father's and my own professions. He wasn't an alter ego, he was more like a friend I looked up. When drawing myself, I stuck to caricatures of my physical appearance, as is the usual way.

Biki as animator at his animation desk (left) and aviator with his bi-plane (right).
At one point I became a fan of Larry Gonick's The Cartoon History of the Universe. After going through the first two books, I saw a photo of him on the final page of the third. I was
Larry Gonick drawing the professor.
really surprised- I had always assumed that the professor character who introduces and explains the topics in the book would be a caricature of himself. Mr. Gonick looked nothing like the professor. Then it dawned on me- to create a figure to represent yourself, you don't have to make it look like the face you see in the mirror. You're free to design any character that feels right for you; if you draw and animate it with the thought that it is really yourself, you'll be giving it your own expressions and gestures without even really trying.

Walt Disney painting a self portrait-
by Disneyland illustrator Charles Boyer,
a referece to the famous whimsical self-portrait
by Norman Rockwell.
So I started using the rabbit design in earnest, modifying him to "feel" more like me (not "look" like, "feel" like). He had a plodding gait like I did, a drowsy left eye, wore what I wore (including a neckerchief with an edelweiss pattern and showing a marked preference for checkered shirts) and was rather on the plump side. When diabetes struck, and I lost weight, I was reluctant to change the design, but now the bunny is considerably thinner.

The Bunny blithely plump before diagnosed as diabetic, and svelte afterwards.

Of course the bunny appears as all my avatars, and I wanted to make a really good illustration for my facebook cover photo. The operation turned out to be more involved than I thought, since I had to patch up a lot of bits one way or another, and I moved various details around to make some things come out. Then I found Facebook was cutting too much from the top and bottom, so I taking advantage of the area hidden behind the ears, I split the background photo and moved the right side further right, extending the image.

Why did I take so much trouble with a Facebook cover photo that most people would never see? I think it was because I wanted to create a definitive self portrait that I could use elsewhere and even leave to posterity.

RAKS-I ŞAHANE- DANCE TO PLEASE A SULTAN

TÜRKÇE: (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH
Animaton and dance are really sister arts, since the essence of both is movement. And dance can look great in animation. I may be a lousy dancer myself, but I take great pleasure in animating dancing characters. And I certainly look down upon belly dancing, for so long a part of our culture.

It must have been 1994, Hahn Film Berlin undertook the production of the Das Geheimnis der Tempelkatze ("The Mystery of the Temple-Cat"), a middle-eastern adventure in the direct-to-video Benjamin Blümchen series. When I heard there was to be a belly dancing sequence, I volunteered to animate all of it- I could't let the Europeans mess that up, could I? We were living in Ankara at the time, so I worked from there and sent the scenes over (billed for "Tahsin Lâle Özgür Animasyon Tic. Ltd. Şti.").

Years later, while working at Disney Paris on Tarzan (probably 1997 if not '98) someone brought in a cassette of experimental animation for The Prince of Egypt, then in production at Dreamworks. There was a dancing female figure, which I did not spot in the final film. It was fine, but far from the belly dance that I was used to seeing. I took it as a challenge and animated a belly dancer, rough of course, with the air of "this is how it's done fellas!" I showed it to my friends and we all went back to work. But I kept the drawings!

Shortly after our return to Turkey I was invited to a joint exhibition on the theme of "Different Approaches to Drawing". I took out the roughs and tied them down with blue pencil. I prepared a video explaining the process of animation and integrated the animated dancer into it.  The drawings were exhibited with the video. The venue was the "Kasa Gallery", inside an unused, cavernous safe in an old bank building in Istanbul's Karaköy district (January 26th to February 6th, 2000). I never shared that video online, though I meant to; I always hoped I could add subtitles. But others have. Here's one with our "company demo" added; there are chunks missing from the beginning of one and the end of the other though:  "Tahsin Özgür Belgeseli" ("Tahsin Özgür Documentary").

Apparently impressed by my contributions to this exhibition, Galeri Apel invited me to the "2001 Nights" joint exhibition (January 5th to February 4th 2001). I shot and edited together a new video corresponding to the theme, and made some new animation of my dancer, including the bit where she gets up from the floor. I did share that video on this blog. See: "Tales of 2001 Nights", 11 Eylül- September 2010.

Now that I have the possibility of scanning the drawings rather than shooting with a camera, I have put together a higher quality video of my dancer, which I am presenting herewith.

TATSIZ BİTEN PERİ MASALI- FAIRYTALE WITH A SORRY ENDING

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Hahn Film'in ve orada toplanan ekibin filmle ilişkisi kesiliyordu.

O yaz yaptığım canlandırma denemelerimden birini burada paylaşıyorum.

(Yeni teknikle yapılan film 2006'da gösterime girdi.)

ENGLISH

The success of Dreamworks' Shrek unleashed a rash of takeoffs on fairytales.

Germany had recently been reunified and East Germany had recently joined the free and capitalist west. A bank seated in Germany offered its clients to invest in and share the profits of what it hoped would be just such a successful animated hit. One of Shrek's several producers, John Williams by name, was engaged as the producer for the new production, and raked in a sizeable salary from his home in the U.S. I contributed experimental animation from my home in Istanbul (see: "Rapunzel", 12 Ocak/January 2011). Then there was a production stop. It was relaunched about a year later.

Hahn Studio in Berlin had been engaged and a fine crew assembled for the project. Lâle and I packed my bags and moved to Berlin. Everything had been restarted from scratch, all my previous animation had just disappeared.

It was an unforgettable and very full summer; I worked through the week and we travelled and discovered Germany on the weekend. But there was something odd about the production. Storyboards and animation were being churned out but no one came to see them.

Come autumn, all the leaves fell at once! We were called to a meeting where we were told the film would be done in CG. Hahn Film and the talent gathered there were cut off from the production.

I am sharing one of the experimental animation scenes I made that summer.

(The CG film was released in 2006.)

BİR YILDIR "DEDE"- "GRANDPA" FOR A WHOLE YEAR

TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

I have a "daughter" who makes me happy by calling me "dad". That made me a "granpa" When she had twins on February 20th of last year. When I welcomed their arrival with a drawing, I resorted to a pair of stereotype cute boys because I couldn't know what they would look as they grew.

They live downstairs, and this gives me plenty of occasions to enjoy being a "grandpa". However, they have a warmer relationship with Lâle.

Their features are now sufficiently developed to warrant proper portraits. The drawing I drew to mark the occasion drew a very positive response; so much so that my daughter had it blown up to add to the party decorations.

The first celebration was on the evening of the birthday, then came a bigger bash on Saturday (13 kids+grownups). Today (Sunday) there is another group; we can hear the noise from upstairs.

Wishing them many crowded and noisy birthdays...!
