BEN OLMANIN DAYANILMAZ AĞIRLIĞI/ THE UNBEARABLE HEAVINESS OF BEING ME

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH:

Sometimes the burden that falls upon the shoulders of a person (or a rabbit) becomes so hard to bear!

This bit of animation emerged at a time when I was feeling just that way!

I would prefer more lighthearted inspirations but using our art to put up with distressing experiences is a prerogative of us artists!

ÇANAKKALE-1915-GALLIPOLI

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Little bits of existing animation. I animated the falling ANZAC when I was still at Disney Paris, between 1996-1998. I added on the Turkish soldier firing at him in 2008, and used them in a commemoration clip for the anniversary of Atatur's demise, December 10th.

ENGLISH

This year we commemorate the centennial of the Gallipoli campaign, which the British and French, supported by the Australian and New Zealanders (ANZAC) and various colonials, undertook to force their way through the Turkish Dardanelles straits and take the capital. That the Turks were able to resist and repulse the onslaught has been a great point of pride. It has found particular resonance in Turkey this year, at a time when the country has been stabbed in the back and invaded from within. (If you want the backstory on that you can see tashlik.blogspot.com)

This year the commemorations on March 18th, the anniversary of the Naval Victory (really the overture of the 8-month conflict) enjoyed tremendous public response. Those critical of the government and accuse it of recklessly selling off the country see the defense of Gallipoli as an inspiration for a renewed struggle for national defense. Supporters of the government and its policies tend to interpret the struggle at Gallipoli as a victory of muslim piety over the godless infidel. Our outlook corresponds to the former, and we went there to join the activities of the TGB (Türkiye Gençlik Birliği, the "Union of Turkish Youth").

Let's leave the politics aside; this isn't that kind of a blog.

One evening far back, when I was still an animation student in Canada, I accompanied some friends to a intellectual cafe where we sat on the floor and listened to some live music. First there was a south American group singing revolutionary songs in Spanish. Then came a young lady with a guitar and a powerful voice and sang some songs of peace, love and nature. Then she sang something called The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, which told of an Australian sent to war in Gallipoli and lost his legs in battle. Naturally, it caught my attention. After she had finished her program, I went up to the singer and told her I was Turkish, that the Gallipoli conflict was an important and proud part of our history, that I was studying animation, and that I would really like to use the song in a film. She kindly consented to record it for me. And she did. She came to our school, played and sang, and we recorded the song. She said "I don't take money from students", and so I got the fine performance for free. Her name was Paula Kriwoy.

I was still a student then, now I am retired. I have animated for years, but never got round to putting the recording to good use. A few sketches, some bits of animation, that's all. A shame, really! The centennial reminds me of this excellent material I landed on but shamefully left lying dormant.

The Band Played Walzing Matilda, words and music by Eric Bogle, 1971. The original Waltzing Matilda, to which the song refers, is from 1895, words and music by Banjo Paterson.

PAZARYERİNDE FUTBOL- SOCCER IN THE MARKETPLACE

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Bkz. www.ersoz.com .

From time to time I sift through my cassettes to salvage old animation, and some of them I share with you. This time I have another scene from Werner Beinhart (1990). I shared another on October 28th 2014 ; see "Bikers on the Road."
I worked on that film back in 1989-90, and was even credited as head animator (chefanimator) though there was a whole section made in Hamburg towards which I had absolutely no contribution at all. Looking back, I can't help reflecting on what a happy, exciting time it was. The Berlin wall was cracking open, the world was going through a historic change and we were right at the hub of it, incongruously occupied with a cartoon about drunken motorcyclists. From the scenes I am sharing you can see how loose and free the animation style was. Maybe they look that way because I was so relaxed and confident when I made them.

In this section of the movie our hero Werner flings a soccer ball out of his apartment window down to a market area. The ball bounces off things and gets kicked around by the shoppers and vendors, resulting in a soccer match- except that the "players" are unaware of the game. The spectators consist of birds on the surrounding roofs and of course Werner himself who delivers a continuous commentary like a sports reporter.

The crew included the gifted Turkish animator Şahin Ersöz. Animation came so naturally to him, he produced so fast, so effortlessly, with so much exuberance and life, that he easily qualifies as a genius in the art. See: www.ersoz.com

DEMO KASETİME GİRİŞ- DEMO INTRO

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

Because my name sounds so odd and unpronouncable to non-Turkish ears, I thought it would be a handicap for job hunting in the wider world. I decided to turn the disadvantage into an advantage by making fun of it. I animated this as an introduction to my demo cassette sometime during my stint as animation instructor at Bilkent University, Ankara, which would place it between 1991 and 1995. I know because the voice belongs to one of our neighbors there, a British lady named Rachel who also was also teaching at Bilkent.
