BERBAT KEDİ ŞERAFETTİN- THE ROTTEN CAT

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

ENGLISH

For years we keep hearing that "the first Turkish animated feature film has been produced", all soon forgotten because, though they fulfilled the requirement in screen time, they were technically never up to par.

Now we have a really lavish and well made production before us, with quality animation (I would have preferred more elasticity in the mouth action), fast tempo, efficient storytelling and strong visuals. To top it all, it all feels authentic, all indigenously Turkish, from the dialogue full of colloquialisms and slang to the authentic locales, all familar sights of Istanbul like Taksim square, the steep Cihangir neighbourhood, the Bosphorus, the Galata tower, and the generic corner grocer.

Unfortunately, the protagonist is a selfish, fowlmouthed, agressive bully and potential rapist named Şerafettin ("Shero"). He breaks into a flat to molest a housecat, who gets electrocuted and killed when she tries to escape. In an ensuing scuffle, Shero flings her distressed owner out of a window to his death, his brain landing beside him. The poor man returns as a zombie to seeks revenge, becoming the villain of the film, with Shero as the unlikely hero. I cannot condone a film that lionizes the agressor and villainizes the victim. Just a few days ago I and my wife were in a protest march against the victimization of women- a very real problem here. What kind of a message would this film broadcast to the sick minds out there?

They are carrying photographs of Hilal Aslan, shot by her brother on June 20th 2014 for wanting to stay with her boyfriend, Cansel Buse Kınalı, who shot herself on February 24th 2016 after reportedly being abused by her teacher, and Özgecan Aslan, murdered by a minibus driver in course of an attempted rape on February 11th 2015.
There were many other photos carried that day.
(Image from my own camera.)

I watched the film with mixed feelings; I was simultaneously swept and repelled by it, I laughed even as my stomach turned. Watching a good animated film leaves me a warm afterglow, a state of happiness and purification. This film dragged me down, left me feeling sullied. I paid attention to the mood of the public leaving the theatre, both of our screening and the one preceding it; no smiling faces- and this, after a comedy..!

For years director Mehmet Kurtuluş has had a sustained ambition to create an animatied feature that would be up to international standards. In the end he achieved his goal. I wholeheartedly congratulate him and the Anima team on this. It is
unfortunate that he opted for the "cult" comic strip of cartoonist Bülent Üstün.

He's saying "What are you looking at, love?!"

It is probable that the intention was to cash in on the popularity of the strip, but on the other hand a film inaccessible to children below 13 and requiring parental guidance up to 15 already sacrifices a large slice of the audience potential. (I hear families who inadvertently brought their children to see the film to see the kitty were shocked.) As for the fans of the film, they would prefer to find ways to see the film for free.

Now that they have proven that they are capable of creating a fine animated feature, I expect Mehmet Kurtuluş and the Anima team to tell us a worthwhile story.

ÇAĞDAŞ/ ÇAĞDIŞI- FUTURE IN THE PAST

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down)

How do I use this?

Şimdilik bu şekilde! For now, like this!

ENGLISH

Just over a week after my 60th birthday I finally made a move to catch up with the times and purchased a "Cintiq", a gadget for drawing and even animating without paper, applying an electronic pen directly onto a monitor. I must immediately thank my friend Erhan Gezen for his valuable help in the matter. I went for the more portable 13" model. (Also easier on the pocketbook!)

Pixels
I study the lessons of the manual and practice as I find the time. I designed a simple dog character on the Cintiq, which I intend to use for animation practice- I've named it "Pixels". But I haven't come as far as the actual animation lessons yet; right now I am learning about the use of levels.

I made my first drawing exercises on the Cintiq on the evening of January 30th, a Saturday. I settled in front of the TV, Ulusal Channel, to watch my favorite talk show, Cevizkabuğu ("Walnutshell", a pun on the surname of host Hulki Cevizoğlu.) I intended to put the time spent in front of the telly to good use, trying to catch up with the times and connect with the future by learning the basic tools and practice drawing with the electronic pen on glass.

As luck would have it, the guests of host Mr Cevizoğlu included a pair of retrograde charlatans, preaching a crazy cult of the "Mahdi",  agressively trying to convince the hosts, other guests and the audience that "the signs were there", that the evidence was "scientific and irrefutable", that "he" was already born, and even gave full description of his features, as revealed, so they said, centuries in advance. Obviously, there is a megalomaniac somewhere all set to play the role! The disciples preaching his cause were named Altuğ Berker and Dr. (Dr?) Oktar Babuna. To look at them, you would think they were respectable, intelligent men, which seems to suggest they are evil rather than nutty. Apparently they were regularly administering their poison on some other channel. After years of fanaticism administered to this nation, now this!

Two theologians took up the responsibility of presenting counterarguments, but they could go no furter than to say that, though they did believe in the "Mahdi", this one was not he.

Wrestling with the new-fangled contraption on my lap, trying to catch up with the time, I found myself listening to drivel that would be too backward for the middle ages.

One of my first digital sketches.
The situation had its effect on my first digital sketches ever. The experience took its place in my memories as an artist trying to be creative in a country like ours.

KAHVALTIDA AYDINLANMA- ENLIGHTENMENT AT BREAKFAST

TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)

(Bkz. "Hatasız Kul Olmaz", Tashlık, 12 Şubat 2014.)

ENGLISH

There is a wide spectum of newspapers you can choose from in Turkey, from far left to to extreme right, from seperatist to fanatical fundamentalist. We find the right balance in Aydınlık ("light", in the sense of the opposite of "darkness"), a newspaper that opposes all the parties presently in parliament. It has minimal income from advertising because advertisers are wary of government pressure.

Aydınlık launched a campaign to increase its readership; one aspect of the campaign involved having your own photograph taken while reading the paper and sending it in. Lâle and I decided to contribute with a photo of ourselves studying the paper at breakfast, but in our own style. We would be hand-drawn, inside a real photo, reading a real newspaper. We attached the camera to a tripod, and shot the breakfast table empty, then with ourselves looking at the paper, and a third one where I am holding my coffee cup in the air.

I then drew the figures in position. I coloured the drawings by consulting Lâle for the colors.

Then I put them all together with the program that came with my computer.

We sent the photograph to the e-mail address given by the newspaper. We tried over and over again but kept getting "delivery failure" notices. It never got through!

We shared it on Facebook. Now we are shareing it here. Aydınlık is our preferred newspaper, and we recommend it! It enlightens us!

Placing handdrawn figures inside a photograph of a real environment is a fussy and difficult business, but I enjoy it nevertheless. I did this once before with the Aydınlık
"We Made a Mistake"
newspaper- when Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ let it slip that the absurd Ergenekon case was a hoax. This was the first official admission of what we had for so long been saying and demonstrating for, so it was with exceptional pleasure that I prepared the image. The headline says "we made a mistake", quoting the minister.

YENİ YILA GİRERKEN- COMING INTO THE NEW YEAR

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

My animation on New Years' Eve, 2016. Lâle doesn't want me to reveal anything of the project, but this hardly gives away anything at all!

2016'nın ilk dakikaları, evimizde yakın dostlarımızla. Fotoğraflar Murat'ın objektifinden, montajı ben yaptım, fikir Lâle'nin, müzik de tabii ki Abba.

The first minutes of 2016 in our home with close friends. The photos are from Murat's camera, I did the editing, following an idea by Lâle. The song is by Abba, of course.

ENGLISH

We spent new year's eve at home with our friends; some of the finest of Turkish animation were assembled under one roof with their families- with a total of  five children providing the necessary background noise.

In spite of the good company, I managed to retreat to my room long enough to maintain my tradition of entering the new year with my pencil in hand, drawing, preferably animating. Not even the three wild boys charging in and out of my room could faze me. I didn't go for a one-off idea this time, but started a new scene for our very slow moving private short film. I managed to rough in and shoot about two seconds of one character (54 frames; the part with the star on the upper left corner in the clip), the rest I completeded two days later, on January 3rd. There will be two more characters, plus effects, and then cleanup- it will be finished someday.

Once past midnight and into the new year it was a time for photos, and Murat took on the job of snapping a group photo- a "family picture", so to speak. After a few tries, everything went a little bit crazy. When Murat sent us the photos over the net, Lâle suggested I edit them together, but in the reverse order, so that the images transition from mayhem into a state of tranquility. The result looks nostalgic already, and it's only four days on! I put a bit of Abba's Happy New Year as background music and that even heightened the transitory feel. Further on the song goes "...Who can say what we'll find/ What lies waiting down the line/ In the end of eighty-nine...", so it must be from 1979!  Has it really been that long? And even more foreboding, considering the times we live in: "....Happy new year, happy new year/ May we all have a vision now and then/ Of a world where every neighbor is a friend/ Happy new year, happy new year /May we all have our hopes, our will to try/ If we don't we might as well lay down and die...!"
