"HOPATYA"

Çizgi animayonun verdiği mükemmel bir özgürlük vardır. Hayâl ettiğiniz edebileceğiniz herşeyi spontane olarak canlandırabilirsiniz- armatürlerlerle, "rig"lerle uğraşmadan, hemen o anda!

Öğretmenlik yaptığım bir dönemde mutat yürüme ödevlerinden sonra öğrencilerden hiç var olmayan ve kendine özgü hareket biçimi olan bir yaratık hayâl edip canlandırmalarını istemiştim. Adetimdir, bir canlandırma ödevi verdiğim zaman öğrenciler çalışırken ben de kendi yorumumu yaparım.

Bu gördüğünüz benim yorumum. İlginç tarafı, bu yaratık sonra rüyama girdi. Rüyamda öğrendim ki ismi "Hopatya" imiş. Yaratığıma uygun saçmalıkta bir isim yakıştırmış şuuraltım.

There is a wonderful kind of freedom that only hand-drawn animation can offer. You can spontaneously invent and infuse the illusion of life to anything you can can possibly imagine- right then and there, without having to bother with armatures and "rigs" in advance.

Back in the days when I was teaching animation, after the regular walk cycle assignments, I once asked the students to dream up a character with a very special means of locomotion, and to animate it. As is my custom, I animated my own version while they were working on theirs. This was the result.

There is an odd postscript to the story; one night I actually saw the creature in a dream, and learned that its name was "Hopatya" (an amalgamation of "to hop" and "papatya"= "daisy"). My subconscious had matched my absurd character to a suitably absurd name!

Herkes gibi ben de sinirlenirim; bazen kendimi tutamam ve sonra da "keskin sirke" sendromunu yaşarım. Ama yakında kalem kâğıt varsa adrenalini zararsız yönlere kanalize etmenin bir yolu var; okul yıllarından beri hayâli arkadaşım olan "Leopold"'u çağırırım, o benim yerime beni sinir eden herkimse onun hakkından gelir. Kurşun kalem sıvaşığını saymazsak ellerim temiz kalır! Bu çizimler eskiz defterlerimdendir! Kanada'da öğrencilik yıllarımda "Leopold"'un bir de kilden büstünü yapmıştım. Kalıp alma kısmı gözümde büyüdüğü için büstün fotoğrafını çekmekle yetindim. Heykel atölyesi acaip soğuktu! Sene 1977 ya da 78 olmalı!

Like everyone else, I too occasionally lose my temper. Sometimes I'm unable to repress it, and then comes the unavoidable regret. But if I have a pencil and paper handy I just send "Leopold", my imaginary friend since school days, to do the job for me! Clean hands, except for graphite dust. These drawings are from my sketchbook. During my student days in Canada I attempted a clay bust of "Leopold". Because I didn't feel self-confident enough to attempt a casting, I decided to settle for some photos. It was really cold in the sculpture studio! The year was 1977, 78 or thereabouts.

Benim yerime hıncımı sanal yöntemlerle alan hayâli arkadaşım "Leopold" genellikle hareketsiz çizimlerle kendini gösterse da bazen böyle canlanır da! Birisi bam telime bastığında kellesini baltanın altında hayâl etmem yeter!

Most incarnations of my imaginary friend "Leopold" are in the form of still sketches but here he is animated. All I have to do is imagine the head of some waste of space on the chopping block and I'm relieved!
