2ZLER x 8 - THE TWINS x 8

Bizim Beter 2zler Emre ve Sina sekiz yaşlarını doldurdular bile ve ben de doğduklarından beri devam ettirdiğim gelenekle bir doğum günü resmi hazırladım. (Bkz: "Bir Yıldır 'Dede'", 25 Şubat 2018, "2x2", 25 Şubat 2019, "2zler 3ledi", 26 Şubat 2020, "Süper 2zler x 4", 23 Mart 2021,"2zler x 5" 2 Mart 2022, "2zler x 6", 16 Temmuz  2023, ve "2zler x 7", 24 Mart 2024.

Sina, Emre ve babaları Gökmen.

Bu sene doğum günlerinden kısa bir süre önce ailece Bulgaristan'da Borovet'e kayak tatiline gittiler, ben de bu senenin teması olarak kayak maceralarını seçtim.  Resimde 2zleri kayaklarıyla haşince yokuşaşağı vınlarken ve bu arada babalarını savururken resmettim. Renkleri Lâle seçti; çoğu zaman öyle yaparız  zaten.

Duydum ki gerçekte yokuşaşaığı rahatça kayan babaları, sağa sola savrulanlar 2zlerin kendileriymiş. Buna sanatçının yorumu deyip geçelim.

Resmi doğum günlerinde elektronik olarak paylaştım. Elden vermek ancak dün kısmet oldu. Lâle ile İzmit'e gittik, bir doğum günü pastası aldık ve akşam evlerinde ortaya koyup ailece etrafında toplandık.

Çocuklar doğum günlerinde pastalarını yemişler tabii; eksik olan benim doğum günü pastammış! Benim doğum günümde Kırklareli'ndeydiler ve beraberdik ama sucuk ekmek ve profiterol yeterli gelmemiş; doğum günü benim olduğu hâlde pasta yiyememeği bir haksızlık olarak nitelendirmişler!

Dün bu eksiklik telâfi edildi. Neticede dört mumla benim, 2zlerin ve doğum günü yaklaşan Zeynep'in doğum günleri kutlandı. Bana şeker yasak olduğu için yiyemedim, kutlamayı çekmekte olduğum için mum bile üfleyemedim. Ama 2zler muratlarına erdiler ya!

2zlerin 8 yaş doğum günü resmi- Birthday drawing for the Twins, now that they are 8!

 

ENGLISH:

Emre and Sina, the Terrible Twins, are 8 already. Carrying on a tradition that has been uninterrupted since their birth, I made a birthday drawing to mark the occasion. This year they went on a skiing holiday to Borovet, Bulgaria, shortly before their birthday, so their skiing adventure provided the theme for this year's birthday image. I drew the twins wildy zooming downhill, throwing their daddy off balance. Lâle selected the colors for me, as she usually does. 

I heard later that it was really their daddy who swooshed down masterfully, and the twins were the ones to take tumbles, but let's just say I exercised artistic license and leave it at that!

I shared the drawing electronically on their birthday. It wasn't until yesteday that we could finally hand it over physically. Lâle and I went to Izmit, bought a birthday cake, and gathered around it en famille in the evening.

Naturally, the kids had already had their birthday cake (and ate it too) on their birthday; it seems the "missing cake" was mine! You see, the kids were in Kırklareli on my birthday and we were all together, but having sujuk (dried sausage) in bread, plus profiterole (pastry rolls in chocolate sauce), did not compensate for the absence of a proper birthday cake; even though that birthday was mine, not theirs. They considered it unfair to be deprived of a birthday cake on anybody's birthday!

Yesterday, this unaceptable situation was rectified. With four candles, we celebrated the the birthdays of myself, the twins, and also of Zeynep, whose own birthday is approaching! Because sugar is off limits to me, I couldn't eat any. I was shooting the festivity so I didn't even get to blow the candles. But the twins were satisfied and that's what counts!

I hear the cake was delicious!

WOLFL 2025

Bu sene  de yeni yıla arkadaşlarla girdik ve yine yeni yıl canlandırmamı kucağımda yaptım. Arkadaşlarımız Erhan ve Leyla'nın evlerine gidip kanepede yerimi alana kadar ne yapacağımı bilmiyordum! 

Geçen sene, yani 2024 yılbaşı, Başar ve Yasemin'in
evindeydik; o zaman özel filmimde de kullanabileceğim bir canlandırma yapmak istemiştim. Çizgileri toparlamam ("tiedown") bitmediği için bir de "belki özel filmimde kullanırım, şimdiden açık etmeyelim" düşüncesiyle Facebook dışında yayınlamamıştım. O eksiği bilvesile tamamlıyorum!

Bu sene de kanepede oturmuş ne yapacağımı düşünürken elim 2006'dan beri tercihli tercihli yeniyıl temam olan küçük Mozart'a gitti. (2006'dan sonra 2009-2010-2011-2022-2023 yılbaşı geceleri! Bkz: "Wolfl 2022", 4 Nisan 2022, "Küçük Dahiyle Yeni Yıl Gecesi", 12 Ocak 2011.) Sonunda ucuca ekleyip bir kısa film çıkartabilsem ne hoş olurdu; plânsız yaptığım bu sahneler ne kadar oturur bilinmez ama kafamda 14 Köchel sayılı 5 numaralı sonatının Allegro bölümü var. Piyano eşliğinde flüt ile çalınan o canlı ve şakacı eseri Mozart babasıyla İngiltere'ye yaptığı seyahatte yazmış- o sıralarda 9-10 yaşlarında!

Bütün canlandırma bir gecede ve kucağımda olmadı tabii; sadece bütün uçlar ve ilk araresimlerden birkaçı. Sonra evde masamda tamamladım. Resimler kaba kaldı, yani "tiedown" bile yapamadım ama hiç değilse taradım, bu sayede görüntü yüksek çözünürlüklü ve berrak oldu.

Once again, we entered the new year in the company of friends and again I entered the new year animating on my lap. I had no idea what I would end up doing until we got to the home of our friends Erhan and Leyla and I took my place on the couch.

Last year we were at Başar and Yasemin's place. That time I was aiming to do something that I could use in my private film. Because I never finished the tiedown and also because I was reluctant to reveal any animation that would figure in my private project I never uploaded it anywhere besides Facebook. I'm making use of this occasion to remedy that mistake now.

As I sat on the couch reflecting on what to do, I watched as my hand almost involuntarily went for my favored new year's eve theme since 2006, and that was the little Mozart. (2006 was followed by new year's eves 2009-2010-2011-2022 and 2023. See: "Wolfl 2022", 4 Nisan- April 2022, and "New Year's Eve with the Little Genius", 12 Ocak- January 2011.) Wouldn't it be nice if I could cut them all together someday and end up with a short film? I don't know how these unplanned scenes will fit but I always imagine I'm hearing the allegro section of sonata number 5, KV 14. Mozart wrote this cheerful and whimsical piece for a flute accompanied by a piano at the time of his trip to England with his father. He was 9 or 10 years old then!

Of course not all of the animation was done on my lap, and certainly not in one night; only all keys and the first few inbetweens were done. I finished it later at home. The drawings were never tied down, they remained rough, but I did scan them so they are full resolution and evenly lit.

YENİ YIL- 2025- NEWYEAR

Bu sene yeni yıl için iki tema arasında seçim yapmakta zorlandım. Birincisi Gazze'de yaşananlara karşı "uygar" Batı idarelerinin duyarsızlığı, insanların "anti-Semit" olarak damgalanma korkusu ve İsrail'in bunu sonuna kadar istismar edebilmesi, ikincisi senelerce kurgu bilimde ve medyada adı dolaştırıldıktan sonra "Yapay Zekâ" furyasının dünyayı sarması!

Sonuçta ikinciyi seçtim; nihayet Gazze'deki dramı, Batı'da Noel kutlanırken Noel hikâyesinin geçtiği topraklarda katliamlar yaşanması geçen seneki yeni yıl resmi konumuzdu (Bkz: "Yeniyıl 2024",14 Aralık 2023). Yapay Zekâ'yı da, sadece artık işlevsizleşen insanlar (önce sanatçılar) bakımından değil, insan olma meziyetlerimizi elimizden alarak insanlığın kendisini tehdit eden bir tehlike olarak görüyordum. Artık Lübnan'a da yayılan Gazze katliamına da sessiz kalmak istemediğimden iki temayı birleştirmeyi bile düşünmüştüm, ama olacak gibi değildi. Bir tek tema olacaksa da  "Yapay Zekâ" olmalıydı. Ve resmi hazırladım. Derken...

"Advent" (Noel'den önceki haftalar) süresince annemle birlikte YouTube'dan Noel konserleri dinledik ve şarkılarda tekrar tekrar "Jerusalem", "Bethlehem" ve hatta "Israel" lâflarını duydukça Batılı'nın zihninde adeta alternatif, hayâli bir "kutsal topraklar" kavramı oluştuğunu, yoksa o devamlı adlarını ağızlarına aldıkları yerlerdeki acılara kayıtsız kalamayacaklarını düşündüm.

O noktada Filistinli hristiyan rahip Munther Isaac'ın geçen sene "enkaz içinde İsa bebek" motifli bir kreş hazırlayarak Hz. İsa'nın da aslında bir Filistin evlâdı olduğunu dünyaya hatırlatması aklıma geldi. Kreşi hazırladığı kilise de "Beytüllahim Evanjelik Noel Kilisesi"- yani Batılıların "Bethlehem" dedikleri yerde, adını Hz. İsa'nın doğumundan alan kilise!

Yılbaşı resmi bitmişti. Noel günü için de ayrıca birşey hazırlayacaktım.

Kurşun kalemle kâğıda geleneksel Meryem ve bebek İsa motifini andıracak şekilde kucağında bebekli bir Filistinli kadını çizip o yıkım ve kıyım ortamında resmettim. Resmi taradım, sonra bilgisayar içinde siyahla tabaka tabaka gölgeler koyup saydamlaştırarak üstüste gri tonları verdim. 

Yıkık binaların oluşturduğu arka fonu ayrı çizdim, taradım ve aynı şekilde gölgelendirdim, sonra da odaksızlaştırmak suretiyle görsel olarak geriye attım. 

Tankların olduğu ara plânın fazla net, dolayısıyla yakın plâna çok yapışık olduğunu düşündüm ve orayı da ayırarak biraz odaksızlaştırmaya karar verdim. Bunun için tankları da içeren asıl çizim tabakasını kopyalayıp iki kat yaptım, üsttekinden tankların olduğu orta plânı sildim, ön plânı bıraktım. Sonra alttaki ikiz tabakayı bir mıktar odaksızlaştırdım.

Yazıyı da önce kurşun kalemle kâğıda çizdim ve sonra taradım. Üstündeki bir tabaka açıp simsiyah yaptım. Siyahı saydamlaştırarak elde ettiğim gri tonla asıl harflerimi görebiliyordum; en üste bir tabaka daha açıp gölge için siyah aydınlık için beyaza yakın gri kullanarak harflerin kontürlerinin üzerinden geçtim ve böylelikle taşa oyulmuş yazı etkisi yaratmayı amaçladım.

Yazı John Lennon'un 1971 tarihli şarkısına gönderme yapar. Vietnam savaşını protesto eden o şarkı barış çağrısı yaparken ırkların eşitliği prensibini de vurgular ki bugünkü duruma uyar.

Resmi 24 Aralık 2024'te, yani Noel arifesinde Facebook'ta yayınladım. Bazı arkadaşlara elektronik ortamda gitti.

Yukarıda da belirttiğim gibi yeni yıl için yaptığım "Yapay Zekâ" temalı resim daha önceden hazırdı. Onda insanlığın bütün kültür birikiminin bir çukur içine akar resmettim; bu akışla beraber aynı çukurun içine sürüklenen insanlar da görülüyordu. 

Resmi yine önce kâğıt üzerine kurşun kalemle çizdim, sonra
fotokopiledim. Tarayıcı kenarlardan kestiği için sağ ve sol tarafını ayrı fotokopilemek zorunda kaldım. İki tarafı kuruboyayla renklendirdim, taradım ve bilgisayarda birleştirdim. Sonra insanlığın kültür birikimini ifade eden görüntüler bularak bunları çizimde boş bıraktığım resim çerçevelerine, kitap sayfalarına, uçuşan kâğıtlara uyguladım; açılara ve yüzeylerin kıvrımlarına oturtmak için "mesh transform" fonksyonunu kullandım. 

Temelde renk olan uzak plân için yine kurşun kalem ve kuruboya kullandım. Ayrı bir tabaka olarak taradım ve uzağa atmak için odaksızlaştırdım.

Yazıyı da kâğıt üzerine kurşun kalemle yazdım, taradım, Bilgisayarda beyazları atarak saydamlaştırdım, sonra kontürleri rötuşlayarak düzgünleştirdim ve nihayet bilgisayarda renklendirdim.

"Yapay Zekâ" teması birçokları için biraz ağır ve hatta anlaşılmaz olacaktı, onun için geçen sene yaptığım gibi bu sene de bir "light" versyon hazırladım. Bu da öncelikle
dairelerimizin kapılarını süsledi.

2024 ve 2025 yeni yıl tebriklerimizin "light" versyonları.

"Yapay Zekâ" temalı yılbaşı resmimiz Aralık sonunda Facebook'ta yayınlanacak, arkadaş ve akrabalarımıza elektronik ortamda ulaştırılacak, yüzyüze geldiklerimize de elden verilecek.

It was not easy to decide on a theme this year. There were two on my mind; one was the uncaring attitude of the West before what is going on in Gaza, the widespread public fear of being labeled an "anti-Semite", and the ability of Israel to exploit this to the limit, and the other was how, after years of speculation in science-fiction and the media, "Artificial Intelligence", or AI, suddenly became a reality that is spreading like wildfire all over the globe!

In the end I went for the second theme! After all, the drama of Gaza, the absurdity of the West celebrating Christmas while people are being massacred in the very lands of the Christmas story had already been the theme of our New Year's drawing for last year (See: "2024- Newyear", 14 Aralık- December 2024). As for AI, I would not just treat it as an evil that makes people (including but not limited to artists) superfluous, but a threat to humanity in that it sucks in the entirety of human achievement and deprives us of all the virtues that set humans apart. It was hard not to comment on the brutality in Gaza that was by then spilling over into Lebanon. I had even toyed with the idea of combining the themes but it was simply too unviable. If it was to be a single theme, it would have to be AI! So I duly made the picture. But then...

My mother and I watched Christmas concerts on YouTube night after night all through Advent and I kept hearing "Jerusalem", Bethlehem" and even"Israel" sung over and over again, convincing me that the people of the West had conjured an alternate imaginary "Holy Land" in their heads. Otherwise, how could they be so totally insensitive to the suffering going on in the very places they were singing about?

This reminded me of the Palestinian pastor Munther Isaac who tried to remind the world last year that Jesus is also a child of Palestine by putting together a nativity scene with the infant Jesus lying in a pile of rubble. It was located in the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church of Bethlehem. Yes, "Christmas" Church! Yes, Bethlehem!

Our New Year's picture being already complete and ready, I decided to prepare something for Christmas as well!

First I drew a Palestinian woman with her baby in the classic pose of the Madonna and Child, huddled in a hostile environment of slaughter and destruction. Then I scanned it
and, inside the computer, I applied shadows in black layer upon layer, turning them translucent to give grey tones that didn't obscure the contours.

Again with pencil I drew the distant background with the wrecked buildings on another sheet of paper, scanned it, and shaded it in the same way. Then I blurred the level to make it all seem distant.

Seeing that the middle distance with the tanks looked too much in focus, I decided to blur that area as well, but a bit. For this I copied the layer of the main drawing, which included the tanks, erased the area of the middle distance and the tanks from the upper layer of the twin layers, and blurred the lower one.

For the caption, I did the lettering by hand, pencil on paper, and scanned it in. I opened a new layer above it and filled it completely black, then turned it gray by making it translucent. This way I could see through to my own lettering below. Adding a new level on top, I went over the contours in black for shadows and very light grey for the illuminated parts to achieve an effect of letters chiseled into stone.

The caption refers to a John Lennon song from 1971. It was a protest song against the Vietnam war and besides calling for peace it stressed racial equality, which I saw fitting in the present context.

I published the illustration on Facebook on Christmas Eve, December 24th 2024 and shared it with some friends electronically.

As I mentioned above, the image I prepared for New Year's was already done by this point. There I had chosen to depict the entire cultural heritage of humanity cascading into a pit. You see a number of people being carried in as well.

As usual I drew the composition with pencil on paper, then I photocopied it. Because the copy machine cuts off the edges I copied the right and left sides seperately. I colored them with colored pencils, scanned them, and joined the two parts inside the computer. Then I searched for images that represent the cultural heritage of humanity and applied them to the empty picture frames, book pages and fluttering sheets of paper in the drawing. I used the "mesh transform" option to make the images conform to the perspectives and the curves and irregularities of the surfaces to which I intended to apply them.

For the far distance I used lead and colored pencils on paper which I then scanned and blurred.

I also did the lettering with pencil and paper, then scanned it. I cleared out all the white, making it black lines against a transparent background, Then I retouched the pencil lines and finally colored them in.

The "AI" theme was bound to be too heavy-handed for many,
even impossible to understand. I decided to make a "light" version, as I had done last year, which I initially put to use to decorate the doors of our apartments.

Our AI-themed composition for the New Year will be published at the end of Facebook on December 2024, when I will also send them to friends and relations electronically. Those we meet face to face will receive a signed printout.

2zler bu sene 7 yaşındalar. Kocaman oldular! Artık eskisi kadar çok göremediğimizden gündemlerinde ne olduğunu bilmek ve geleneksel doğum günü resimlerine tema seçmek zorlaştı. Ama bu senenin en büyük farklılığı artık okullu olmaları, okuma-yazma öğrenmeleridir şüphesiz!

The twins are 7 years old! Since we don't see them that often, we don't get to follow what is topical for them lately, and that makes it hard to pick a theme for their traditional birthday drawing. However, there can be no doubt that the one great difference in their lives this yeat is that they are going to school, learning to read and write!

YENİYIL- 2024- NEWYEAR

Son haftalarda medya İsrail'in Gazze'yi bombalaması görüntüleriyle dolu. 

Ebedi ve değişmez mazlûm rolünü büyük bir kararlılıkla kullanan ve ölmüş "6 milyon Yahudi'nin" çekmiş olduklarını sonuna kadar istismar eden bir milletin başka bir topluma, hem de kendi ülkesi içinde yaşayan bir topluma, benzer bir muameleyi reva görürken "asıl mazlûm biziz" demesi aslında neredeyse komik.

Komik olmayan bu arada ölen Araplar. 

 

Prenses Yasemin'in de Arap olduğunu hatırlamaları için...

"Terörist Hamas"'ın Filistinlilerin kapatıldığı Gazze'den çıkıp 1200 kişiyi öldürmesi acı, hatta korkunç!

Ama İsrail Ortadoğu'daki en büyük askeri güçlerden biriyken, hem de üstelik nükleer güçken, ABD'nin diplomatik ve askeri bütün desteğini de alırken, ellerinde hafif silahlar, kamyonetler ve en fazla füzelerden başka birşey olmayan Hamas'a "Nazi" benzetmesi yapması da komik. 

Bugün ölen Filistinlilerin sayısı 18000'i geçmişken ABD, Birleşik Krallık, Almanya, Avusturya gibi uygar ve demokratik ülkelerin "İsrail'in yanındayız" diye ortaya atılmaya devam etmeleri acı. En azından trajikomik!

Ve bu atmosferde Noel kutlamalarına gidiliyor olması daha da trajikomik!

For weeks on end the media is awash with images of Israel bombs raining on Gaza.

Diligently cultivating the image of the eternal and unchanging victim and exploiting the suffering of those "6 million Jews" while inflicting a similar kind of treatment upon a population within its own borders, all the while claiming to be the real victims themselves, makes the situation almost comical.

Not so comical is the number of Arabs who are losing their lives in the meantime.

 

To remind people that Princess Jasmin is also an Arab...

 

It is tragic that Hamas "terrorists" broke out of Gaza and killed 1200 people. 

But seeing as Israel is one of the greatest military powers in the Middle East, a nuclear power even, enjoying the full diplomatic and military support of the US, it is again comical that they can liken Hamas which has light arms, pick-up trucks, and at most, rockets, to the Nazis. 

Now that Palestinian deaths have gone over the 18000 mark, it is bitter to hear "civilized and democratic" nations like the US, the UK and Germany go on reiterating that they "stand with Israel". It is tragicomic at best!

Even more tragicomic is the fact that we are approaching Christmas in this gloomy atmosphere.

Jesus was also from Palestine (Bayt Lahm, or Bethlehem, in the West Bank).

What would "the Prince of Peace" have to say about all this?

I couldn't have picked another topic this year!

100 YIL TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ- 100 YEARS TURKISH REPUBLIC

29 Ekim 2023'te Türkiye Cumhuriyeti 100 yaşını kutladı. Bu gibi önemli günlerde başta Facebook olmak üzere elektronik olarak yaptığım paylaşımlar için hep birşeyler hazırlarım. Bu sefer daha özeldi, hazırlayacağım resim 100'üncü yıla yakışmalı, en azından diğer senelerdeki paylaşımlarımdan geri kalmamalıydı!

İlk karalamam biraz düz mantık bir yöne gidiyordu: Atatürk ve arka planı dolduran mutlu insanlar şeklinde! Sabah kahvesi sırasında konusu açılınca Lâle bir fikir verdi, hatta nasıl
olması gerektiğini anlattı diyebilirim. Atatürk'ün "benim naçiz vücudum" şeklinde başlayan sözlerini temel alacaktım! Kalabalığıyla ve kompozisyonuyla zorca birşey çıktı. 

"İlelebet" için yatay 8.

Cumhuriyetin "ilelebet" payidar kalacağı fikri doğal olarak sonsuzluk işaretini de kompozisyonun ortasına getirdi. Sonra gördüm ki o işaret zaten 100. yıl kutlamalarının tekrar eden motifi olmuş bile.

Atatürk'ün o ünlü deyişini resmin iki değişik yerine yerleştirmek suretiyle iki ayrı versyon yaptım; biri daire kapılarımıza asmak üzere A4 formatında, diğeri internet için daha kareye yakın.

Bu sene annem de 100 yaşında, hatta geçti ve 101'ini sürüyor.

Ömrü Cumhuriyet'imize tekabül ettiği için kendisiyle bir söyleşi yapıp yayınlamak istedim. Uzunca ve ilginç bir kayıt yaptım, ama onu SD karttan alırken yanlışlıkla sildim. Dosya kurtarma programları indirip silinenleri kurtarmaya çalışarak daha da vakit kaybettim-başka silinmiş dosyalar kurtuldu ama indirdiğim kurtarma programı herhâlde annemle yaptığım söyleşinin üstüne kaydoldu. Çaresiz yeni bir söyleşi kaydettim. Çok daha kısa oldu zira 29 Ekim ertesi gündü ve montaj + altyazı için zamanım daralıyordu! Aile fotoğrafları ve İnternet'ten  bulduğum dönem fotoğraflarıyla zenginleştirmeye çalıştım. O hâliyle tam gününde paylaşabildim.

Oniki gün sonra 10 Kasım'dı. Anıtkabir imajını bayram resminde kullanmıştım, 10 Kasım için aynı motifi kullanmak doğaldı. Arka plân olarak başka bir 10 Kasım'da, 2013'te kendi çektiğimiz bir fotoğrafı kullandım. Ön plânda da tavşan karakterime şu 100. yılımızda çok anlamlı bulduğum bir karşılaştırmayı yaptırdım: Atatürk'ün bıraktığı eşit vatandaşlığa dayalı lâik cumhuriyet ve tam aksi yönü seçmiş olan ayırımcı din ve ırk devleti İsrail'in düştüğü durum!

Annemle söyleşi- Interview with my mother

On October 29th we celebrated the 100th year of the Turkish Republic. On important days like this I always prepare something to share on Facebook and other social media. This time it was more special; I had to prepare a drawing that would be worthy of the occasion; it should at least not fall short of what I had done before!

My first scribble was rather simplistic: Ataturk with a group of happy citizens filling the background! My wife Lâle gave me a better idea over our morning coffee; I can say she pretty much described the composition. Ataturk's own words

"My frail body is certain to turn to earth one day, but the Turkish Republic will last forevermore"

were to guide the design. The crowd and the involved composition ended up being difficult to execute. 

Horizontal "8" for "forevermore".

To represent the concept of "lasting forevermore" I naturally had to integrate the horizontal "8" that represents infinity into the middle of the composition. I discovered afterwards that the symbol had already become a recurrent motif of the celebrations.

I made two versions by placing the quotation from Ataturk at two different positions, ending up with an A4 to stick on our apartment doors, and a more squarish one to share on the Net.

My mother is 100 years old now, going on 101. 

Because her lifetime correponds to the Republic, I thought it would be appropiate to record her recollections and share them online. I ended up with a longish and very interesting recording. Then, while attempting to transfer it from the SD card to my computer I deleted it all by mistake! I wasted more time downloading programs that were supposed to rescue deleted files. I did rescue some deleted files but not the recording of my mother- I must have overwritten it while trying to download the program that was supposed to rescue it! I had no choice but to make another recording. This one was much shorter because October 29th was the next day and I had very little time left for editing + subtitling. I tried to enrich it with family photos and period images from the Internet. I was able to share it exactly on the day!

Twelve days later it was October 10th, the anniversary of Ataturk's passing. I had used the image of Ataturk's mausoleum in the 100th anniversary drawing, so it seemed very natural to use it for the anniversary of his parting as well. For a backdrop I used a photo we had taken on another November 10th, the one in 2013. In the foreground I had my bunny character make a comparison I believe to be very meaningful on this our 100th year: the secular Republic founded on the principle of equal citizenship bequeathed to us by Atatürk in contrast the sorry situation of nearby Israel that has chosen the opposite path, that of theocracy and apartheid!

ÜÇ TEMEL CANLANDIRMA EGZERSİZİ- THREE BASIC ANIMATION EXERCISES

Yakın arkadaşlarımız Murat ve Ceylan'ın oğlu (ve güzel kocagöz Defne'nin ağabeyi) Tuna bir süre bir heves benden canlandırma dersi aldı- kendi babası animatörken bu biraz şaşırtıcı bir karardı! Benim İstanbul'da annemin yanında geçirdiğim Cumartesi günleri sabah geliyor, öğle yemeğini de bizle yiyip gidiyordu! Böylelikle ben "yine öğrencim oldu", annem de "torunum var" diye sevindirik olduk!

Annem Tuna'yı "torun" saydı, sofrada bi dillendi bi dillendi!

 Aslında pek iyi bir öğretmen sayılmam, anlatacağımı toparlamak, doğru kelimeleri bulmak zor gelir. İsim ve tarihler hep gecikmeli gelir aklıma! Onun için sık sık başvurduğum yöntem verdiğim egzersizleri örnek niyetine kendim de yapmak olmuştur.

"Un dolu çuval" ve "dalgalanan bayrak" egzersizleri ile de öyle oldu. 

Tuna Koç Müzesi'ne , 14 Ocak 2012.

Lip-sych'e sıra gelince Tuna'nın küçükken kaydedilmiş bir videosundan kısa bir cümleciği seçtim. Yıllar önce (2012) beraber Koç müzesini gezerken oradaki eski trenler karşısında "Wauuuuu! Tiyene bak!" dediği duyuluyor. Bir de basit bir karakter modeli hazırlamıştım. İtiraf edeyim modelim sese göre biraz büyük gözüküyor. 

Sonra maket trenlere olan merakımı ifade edecek bir şekilde egzersizin bir versyonunu kendim canlandırdım! 

Tuna canlandırma eğitimi almak için yakında İngiltere'ye gidiyor. Umarım boynuzun kulağı geçtiğini görürüz! Verdiğim egzersizleri bir gün tatmin edici bir şekilde bitirirse onları da paylaşırım. Ya da daha iyisi, kendi paylaşır.

Tuna is the son of our dear friends Murat and Ceylan (and the brother of pretty little Defne with the penetrating eyes). Tuna was at point moved to take animation lessons for me- strange, because his own father is a fine animator. He came over on those Saturdays I spend with my mother in Istanbul, arriving in the morning and leaving after a shared lunch. I was all chuffed up for having a student again and my mother for having "a grandson"!

 

My mother found a "grandson" in Tuna; becoming all chatty at the table!

The truth is, I'm not all that good as a teacher; I have trouble organizing my thoughts and finding the right words. Names and dates always come after a certain time-lapse! So my favored method has been to teach by demonstration, which means animating a version of the exercise myself.

That's what I did with the half-filled flour sack, and the flag wave.

Tuna at the Koç museum,  Jan. 14th, 2012.

When it was time for the lip-sych exercise, I decided to use Tuna's own voice, from when he was little. I took the voice from a video recording made during a visit to the Koç Museum together years ago (2012)! Reacting to the trains on display, he's heard to say "Wooow! Look at the twain!" I made a simple character model which, I have to admit, looks older than the voice!

 

Then I animated a version, giving vent to my enthusiasm for model railways!

Tuna will be going to England soon to study animation. I hope we'll see the student surpass his master. If one day he completes his exercises satisfactorily, I'll share them as well. Or better still, he'll share them himself!
