Animaton and dance are really sister arts, since the essence of both is movement. And dance can look great in animation. I may be a lousy dancer myself, but I take great pleasure in animating dancing characters. And I certainly look down upon belly dancing, for so long a part of our culture.
It must have been 1994, Hahn Film Berlin undertook the production of the Das Geheimnis der Tempelkatze ("The Mystery of the Temple-Cat"), a middle-eastern adventure in the direct-to-video Benjamin Blümchen series. When I heard there was to be a belly dancing sequence, I volunteered to animate all of it- I could't let the Europeans mess that up, could I? We were living in Ankara at the time, so I worked from there and sent the scenes over (billed for "Tahsin Lâle Özgür Animasyon Tic. Ltd. Şti.").
Years later, while working at Disney Paris on Tarzan (probably 1997 if not '98) someone brought in a cassette of experimental animation for The Prince of Egypt, then in production at Dreamworks. There was a dancing female figure, which I did not spot in the final film. It was fine, but far from the belly dance that I was used to seeing. I took it as a challenge and animated a belly dancer, rough of course, with the air of "this is how it's done fellas!" I showed it to my friends and we all went back to work. But I kept the drawings!
Shortly after our return to Turkey I was invited to a joint exhibition on the theme of "Different Approaches to Drawing". I took out the roughs and tied them down with blue pencil. I prepared a video explaining the process of animation and integrated the animated dancer into it. The drawings were exhibited with the video. The venue was the "Kasa Gallery", inside an unused, cavernous safe in an old bank building in Istanbul's Karaköy district (January 26th to February 6th, 2000). I never shared that video online, though I meant to; I always hoped I could add subtitles. But others have. Here's one with our "company demo" added; there are chunks missing from the beginning of one and the end of the other though: "Tahsin Özgür Belgeseli" ("Tahsin Özgür Documentary").
Apparently impressed by my contributions to this exhibition, Galeri Apel invited me to the "2001 Nights" joint exhibition (January 5th to February 4th 2001). I shot and edited together a new video corresponding to the theme, and made some new animation of my dancer, including the bit where she gets up from the floor. I did share that video on this blog. See: "Tales of 2001 Nights", 11 Eylül- September 2010.
Now that I have the possibility of scanning the drawings rather than shooting with a camera, I have put together a higher quality video of my dancer, which I am presenting herewith.
