Hatırlar mısınız balonlu çikletler vardı, içlerine sarılmış küçük, tek esprilik hikâyecikler olurdu. Onlardan ben de yapmıştım ve güzel bir tecrübe olmuştu.
1983'te İstanbul'da İstanbul'un önemli reklâm şirketlerinden Manajans'a girmiştim; hatta daha önce öyle bir kadroları olmadığı hâlde animatör olarak. O zamanlar, önceden de mevcut olan bir balonlu çiklet markasına yeni konsept, yeni karakterler, ve buna uygun yeni serüvenler geliştirmem istendi. Bir grup çocuk önerdim, ilkokul çocukları, hepsi arkadaş, sınıf arkadaşı, yalnız bunlardan birinin- olur a- bir uzay gemisi var! Bacak kadar çocuğun eline nasıl geçmiş böyle bir oyuncak? İki uzaylıyla tanışmış, onlara mevzubahis balonlu çikletlerden ikram etmiş, onlar da bu mükemmel lezzeten ve kocaman balonlar şişirebilmenin zevkinden o kadar hoşnut olmuşlar ki cömertlikleri tutmuş ve kendi uzay gemilerini hediye edivermişler.
Senelerce bu çocuklarla yaşadım, onlarla yattım, kalktım. Şu günlerde bütün ailem taşınıyor; eşyalar oradan oraya gidiyor, sandıklar, tozlu kutular açılıyor, eski anılar ortaya dökülüyor. Derken ne göreyim- ne zamandır kayıp zannettiğim o küçük öykülerden bir zarf dolusu! Eski arkadaşları görmek çok hoş oldu.
Çiklet için iki de reklâm filmi yapmıştım. İlki daha çok ajansın isteğine uygun yapıldı ve biraz uyuntu oldu. İkincisinde yerim daha sağlamdı, biraz zorlayabildim ve daha enerjik birşey çıktı.
Hemen belirtmeliyim ki hem çikletten çıkan küçük öykülerde, hem de filmi yaparken Manajans grafik departmanı çalışanları yardım ettiler. O zamanlar çizgi film resimleri asetata geçirilip boyanırdı! Özellikle mürrekkebe çekmede ilk filmde Ümit Taşçı, ikincisinde Mustafa Yılmazyıldırım'a ayrıca tekrar teşekkür ederim. (Öykülerin mürekkeplenmesinde her ikisi de çalışmıştı tabii.) Çekimlerde de Manajans'ın film bölümü Manavizyon'un teknisyenleri yardımcı oldular.

Do you remember bubble gum stories? Very short stories and situations with a single gag that would come out of the wrapping. I was also involved in a project of this kind once.
In 1983 I started working for Manajans, a major advertising agency in Istanbul. I was taken on as animator, even though that position had not existed in the agency before that date. I was given the assignment of revamping an existing bubble gum brand, developing a new concept, coming up with new characters, and dreaming up and drawing new situations and gags. I proposed a group of children, all friends and classmates in elementary school. One of them happens to own a spaceship! How would a little kid get his hands on a neat toy like that? Simple really! Two wandering extraterrestrials happen by, our young friend offers them some bubble gum, and the aliens are so taken with the taste and so thrilled by the pleasure of blowing bubbles with what they are chewing that they return the favor by generously giving the lad their spaceship.
For years I practically lived with these kids! I ate, drank, slept, and breathed with them. My whole family is moving these days. Trunks and dusty old boxes are being opened, and old memories spill out. I ran into an envelope full of those little bubble gum stories from way back then. It was like meeting old friends again!
I had also animated two commercials for the gum; the first followed the agency's wishes and ended up lacking in pep and rythm. By the time the second one came around, I was more assured of my position and managed to press for something with tempo and energy. I should immediately acknowledge the assistance of the members of the Manajans art department for their invaluable help in inking and coloring the film as well as the little comics. (Back then, drawings for animated films had to be transferred to celluloid cels and painted!) I should mention by name Ümit Taşçı, who inked the drawings of the first film, and Mustafa Yılmaz yıldırım, who did the same for the second. (Both have contributed to the little stories.) For shooting and editing, I relied on the support of the technicions of Manavizyon, the agency's film production branch.
