Adettendir, animatörler konuşmalı bir sahneyi yaparken ses kaydını tekrar tekrar dinlerler- insanı çıldırtasıya tekrar eden cümlecikler stüdyo hayatının ayrılmaz parçasıdır.
"Herkül" filminde çalıştığım günlerde (1996) bitişik masada çalışan meslekdaşım (Marc Eoche Duval) Hades'in yardakçıları Pain ve Panic'i canlandırmaktaydı.
("a god"!)
ENGLISH
It goes with the job: animators have to listen to voice tracks over and over again when they are working on a dialogue scene. Bits of phrases repeated ad nauseum are an essential ingredient of studio life.
Back when I was working on Hercules (1996), I heard an odd sound coming from the neighbouring desk where a colleague (Marc Eoche Duval) was animating Pain and Panic, the demonic henchmen of the villianous Hades. Though repeated endlessley, I could not make it out, hearing it out of context like that. It did feed my imagination though, and I animated the image it conjured. (That's one of the most delicious aspects of the profession; being able to bring life to any fantasy.)
What was the actual line? Amazed that Hercules has returned alive from the river of souls, Hades expresses his surprise, saying he couldn't do that unless he is...
...here Pain and Panic complete the sentence for him: "...a god!"

BULUTLAR ÜLKESİ- LAND OF CLOUDS
TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)
(Bkz. "Tatlı Bela", 4 Ekim 2014). Oradaki insanlar hep bir “güzel hava” özlemi içindeler- yani “güneşli” demek
istiyorlar. Bizim turistlere sattığımız adamın beynini kaynatan cinsten yani!
Oysa biz onların ıslak, bulutlu, havasını seviyoruz. Dağlarını, ahşap evlerini,
son derece güzel şarkılar söyleyen karakuşlarını sevdiğimiz gibi. (Sözlükler “karatavuk”
diyorlar ama biz “karakuş” demeyi tercih ediyoruz!)
Üstte: Tipik dağ kasabasını temaşa ederken.
Sağda: Güzel sesli karakuş
From my sketchbook:
Above: Admiring a typical mountain village.
Right: The blackbird, that excellent singer.
Videoklip:
Videoclip:
Timelapse shots from Brienz in Berner Oberland. The first two are from 2013 and 2014 respectively, shot at the rate of 1 photo every 20 seconds. The rest are from this year's trip, 2016, this time shot at the rate of 1 photo every 15 seconds. You can hear the song of the blackbird on the track.

After missing 2015, we managed to attend the Annecy
Animation Festival this year- and true to our custom, followed it up with a
week in Switzerland. (See: "Sweet Poison", 4 October-Ekim 2014.) People there kept expressing their longing for “nice
weather”, by which they mean “sunny”. You know, the brain-boiling kind we sell
the tourists! They were always surprised to hear we actually like their wet and cloudy weather.- just
as we like their mountains, chalets, and those Meistersinger of birdsong, their blackbirds.

ÇAKMA HİTLER- APING HITLER
TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)
Bu sahneleri aldığı son karar nedeniyle Bundestag'a adayarak yayınlıyorum.

ENGLISH
In 1999 I started animating from home in Istanbul under the banner of our brand new, albeit very small company, Esin Desen. Our erstwhile employer, Hahn Film, asked me to animate some scenes for a new Werner film:
Werner- Volles Rööäää!!! (Something like "Full gas", literally "full pipe", as in exhaust pipe.) The villain was a crooked contractor. Werner dressed up and acted like Hitler to fool the skinheads guarding the construction site. I animated these two scenes in Istanbul in 1999 or 2000 while another Turkish animator, Şahin Ersöz, animated Werner in the hookup scenes from his home in LA.

I dedicate these scenes to the Bundestag for their recent resolution.

MODEL VATANDAŞ-TOLGA ZIPKINKURT- A MODEL CITIZEN
TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)
He just felt like it, so he gave this to me: a Republican tank captured by Franco's insurgents. Besides, he "needed the space".
Tolga Zıpkınkurt- pet shop boy.
A US tank rumbling along towards Paris on one of the shelves behind the counter..
Also from the shelves behind the counter- Germans loading a railroad carriage.
ENGLISH
We understand professionalism as excellence in execution of whatever task. The Word comes from “profession”, in other words, a job, something one does for money, so “professionalism” is really doing your job well. But there are also masters of their craft who create at least some of their work as “amateurs”, and I have an even greater respect for them, as well as feel closer in spirit- because they are willing to employ their expertise, labor and time for something other than money, their only motivation being simply loving what they do!
Tolga Zıpkınkurt is an alumnus of the Animation Department of the Anadolu University in Eskişehir, but never did any animation after school. He moved directly to modelmaking. Even though his student days never coincided with my time as a guest instructor at the University, he politely addresses me as “teacher” (for which I am thankful). He runs a petshop in a backstreet of Istanbul and the models he builds in the meantime he piles up on shelves behind the counter. If he likes you, he’ll give you one (“lack of space”). He insisted I accept the model of a “Republican tank captured by Franco’s insurgents during the Spanish civil war”.
Tolga is not just a master amateur; you can admire his professional work at Miniatürk Istanbul and Mini City Antalya. But what really impresses me is that he keeps producing for no other reason than the urge to create something excellent, only to give it away. This, to me, is being an artist: having the unstoppable compulsuion to continue executing ones art.

SANAL KÖPEK PIXELS- PIXELS THE VIRTUAL DOG
TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)
ÇAĞI YAKALAMAK- CATCHING UP WITH THE TIMES from tahsinozgur on Vimeo.
ENGLISH
After spending a lifetime with pencil and paper I finally had enough of my "dinosaur" image and, in an attempt to catch up with the times, purchased that infernal device called the "Cintiq". I started out by trying to learn to draw on the thing, attempted to read and understand the manual, did a few illustrations, and designed a puppy for my animation exercises whom I called "Pixels". (See "Future in the Past", 3 Mart-March 2016) Then, having had enough, put it aside to rest. Last week, I picked it up again and embarked on my first serious attempt to animate on the gadget. I am sharing the result.

ALTIN VE NAZAR- GOLDEN NUGGETS AND THE EVIL EYE
TÜRKÇE (For English, please scroll down.)
Me, Lâle, and my broken "flipper".
Though I try not to fall for superstitions, I have to admit I am not totally free of the Turkish belief in the "evil eye", the envious gaze that brings bad luck. Tourists to our country are familiar with the blue glass bead with the eye motif that is meant to ward it off, and there are other recipes like throwing salt into a fire or a hot pan. On occasion I have resorted to such precautions- just in case.

Tourists to our country are familiar with the blue glass bead with the eye motif that is meant to ward it off, and there are other recipes like throwing salt into a fire or a hot pan. On occasion I have resorted to such precautions- just in case.
In the spring of 1996, when working at Hahn Film, Berlin, I was given the assignment of animating a commercial for a kind of jam-filled toasting bread. It was called "Golden Nuggets", and a wild west theme was chosen to match the name. I was to animate the whole film, including all effects, and it promised to be a very pleasurable job.
I had just been accepted by Disney Paris and was only waiting for my work permit to come through. (See: "My Alice Test for Disney", 9 September-Eylül 2011). Life was good!
Then I went and broke my left hand at a thermal spa in Baden Baden- I won't get into the details; they are far too silly! One is tempted to say it was the "evil eye"!
I animated three of the scenes with my left hand in a plaster cast. I would first flip with my right, quickly pick up the pencil and add a line, then put my pencil down and repeat the process.
I managed to complete the assignment as planned. The clean-up team included my wife Lâle. In spite of its small faults it turned out to be an okay film, and over time the annoyance of a broken hand became just an interesting anecdote
