ÇİZGİ FİLM BAYRAMI-2016- HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DAY

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

For this year's "Hand-Drawn Animation Day" I reused this animation I once made for Maltepe University. It appears at the end of the videoclip below. To see it on its own click here.

Hand-drawn animation using pencil on paper has a proud past that spans a century; this being so, I cannot bear to witness it thrown into the attic of history, considered the primitive form of what is seen as the maturity achieved through new technologies. Some friends, my wife and myself came up with the idea of having a day dedicated to hand-drawn animation only, as an art in its own right, chosing November 18th, the day Mickey Mouse met the moviegoing public for the first time with Steamboat Willie in 1928.(See: "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", 10 Eylül-September 2010, "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", 18 Kasım-November 2013, "Hand-Drawn Animation Day", 18 November-Kasım 2015.) We don't know about anybody else, but we're still celebrating.

To mark the occasion, I reused an bit of animation I had done in 2005 for the animation department of Maltepe University, where I was teaching at the time. (See: "Maltepe Animasyon", 15 Eylül-September 2010.) They aren't using it, so I decided to reclaim and reuse it for Hand-Drawn Animation Day.

This year we had close friends from the industry over at our place, and it was a great celebration! We watched and talked about animation, tried to steer flear of politics, the kids laughed and shouted. I edited together some home videos I shot that evening, you can see it just before the English text. The above-mentioned animation comes at the end. The music is from Mozart's "Turkish" opera, "The Abduction from the Seraglio" (Die Entführung aus dem Serail).

PEGASUS'U TANIMAK-GETTIN' TO KNOW PEGASUS

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

İncelemem için filme kaydedilmiş at hareketleri tedarik edildi.

(Hades’in canlandırması benimdeğil, büyük ihtimâlle Bolhem Bouchiba.)

Left: Animators are given sculptures of their assigned characters as reference. This is the Pegasus sculpture that fell to me.
Yukarıda Pegasus için etüdlerim. Üstteki iki tanesi verilen heykelden. Alt solda sanat şehri Paris'te III. Alexandre köprüsünün iki başındaki dört heykelden biri. Alt sağda ise bir espri.

Above are some of my studies for Pegasus. The top two are drawings of the sculpted model. Bottom left: inspiration from the city of Art, one of the four sculpture groups at the ends of the Alexandre III bridge in Paris. Bottom right: a joke.

 Pegasus için deneme canlandırmalarım.

Pegasus'un keyfi- ve benim de keyfim!
Pegasus pleased with himself-as I was at the time.

"Gülen Pegasus" sahnelerini çizdiğim günlerden bir fotoğraf. Arkamdaki takvime göre Ocak 1997.
Üstte sağda Pegasus'un model heykeli gözüküyor.

According to the calender behind me it's January 1997.

ENGLISH

Wish upon a star, believe, and your dreams will come true: a very Disney life philosophy. And my own wish, as an animator, had been to work for Disney. That came true in June 1996, and not inboring Los Angeles but in Paris, city of art! So I can say the Disney philosphy did not disappoint me.

But once in, saw the work was just starting. I was assigned to the Pegasus crew, but before I was allowed to animate the character, I had to get to know him. I had to study the modelsheets and draw him in various poses and expressions. I had to study horse movements recorded on film.

By procedure, each animator is given a beautifullly sculpted model of their character and I drew mine from different angles. I even made some experimental animation to study, among other things, how make the wings plausibly lift the horse.

Then the real work started. The first few scenes I animated for the film encountered some turbulence but thanks to the able and supportive supervision of Ellen Woodbury, it was smooth flying the rest of the way.

Months later, towards the end of production in early 1997, I was given a pair of hookup scenes of Pegasus blowing the flame off Hades’s head, and then laughing at the result. I particularly enjoyed animating the laugh because I put in  my own joy and satisfaction in having become a Disney animator, successfuly bringing my first feature work to a close. That was really me laughing there! I even kept the original roughs; still have them! The animation of Hades, by the way, is almost certainly by Bolhem Bouchiba.
