2000 senesi yazı, bir senedir Esin Desen ticari ismiyle çalışıyorduk. Berlin'deki eski iş yerimden sahneler alıp yapıyordum. Prodüksyonda korsanlı morsanlı bir çizgi film vardı. (Abrafaxe- Under the Black Flag, Türkçe adı "Abrafakslar, Siyah Bayrağın Altında" olurdu, eğer Türkiye'ye ulaşsaydı.)
Filmin açılışı için bir korsan bayrağı animasyonu isteniyordu; verilen modele göre de yırtık pırtık bir bayrak! Dramatik, değişken bir rüzgâr olsun istedim, animasyonu tek kare yaptım ve tekrar yoktur. Daha doğrusu çift kare yaptım, tek kare araları o zaman Esin Desen'de stajyer olan yakın arkadaşımız Rıdvan Çevik yaptı. Tek kare aralarda bile o yırtık pırtık uçları gözden geçirip yer yer değiştirmek gerekti çünkü her yırtık parçanın ayrı bir bayrak gibi davranabildiği bu durumda araresim felsefesi hep işlemiyor; bayrağın uçlarıda aranan hırçınlığı- "şiddet ve celali"- yumuşatıyor.
Bitmiş filmi sonra gördüm, malesef girişini tamamen değiştirmişler, benim bayrak da yok olmuş, daha doğrusu yok olmaktan beter olmuş, açık denizde bir direğin tepesinden alınmış ve bir iç mekânda yavaşlatılmış olarak kullanılmıştı!
It was the summer of the year 2000, Esin Desen had been active as a legal undertaking for a year already and I was animating scenes for my erstwhile employer in Berlin. There was an animated pirate adventure in production, title: Abrafaxe- Under the Black Flag.
I was to animate a pirate flag for the film's opening shot. The modelsheet called for a tattered flag and, to add the touch of drama necessary for a pirate adventure, I went for a strong and varying wind rather than a languid breeze. The animation is all on ones with no cycles, I animated it on twos and our good friend Çevik, who was doing his internship at Esin Desen at the time, did the inbetweens on ones. Then we had to go back and modify the tattered edges because in this case, with every torn piece behaving as a seperate little flag, the logic of straight inbetweens doesn't always work: simple straight inbetweens would have diminished the feeling of frenzy I was expecting.
Eventually, I got to see the finished film. I was a bit dismayed to see the original concept for the opening altered, and my flag animation disappeared. Actually, it was worse than that; instead of the top of a mast on high seas it was placed in a closed room and slowed down.
